After all the talk and leaks going around, Microsoft finally lifted the curtain on its first-ever handheld gaming console series – the ROG Xbox Ally. Revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase 2025, this new device is built in partnership with ASUS, aiming to blend Xbox’s console ecosystem with the flexibility of PC gaming. There will be two different variants at launch – the regular ROG Ally and a more powerful version named ROG Ally X.

These handhelds are designed closely around the Xbox ecosystem. From software features to the way it’s shaped, everything’s built with console players in mind. Windows 11 powers the system, and the familiar Xbox Game Bar and other in-built Xbox tools will be right there. The layout, too, has been tweaked for comfort, with grips and controls modeled after Xbox’s own gamepads.

Difference Between ROG Ally and Ally X

Though the ROG Ally and the Ally X look quite similar on the outside, under the hood is where you’ll spot the changes. Both of them are using the same 7-inch Full HD display, which supports a 120Hz refresh rate and comes protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, but performance-wise, they go in slightly different directions.

The base ROG Ally is more for casual users or those looking to enter handheld PC gaming without spending too much. It’s running on an AMD Ryzen Z2 A chip, has 16GB of RAM, and comes with a 512GB SSD. The controls are what you’d expect from an Xbox-style layout, with standard ABXY buttons, D-pad, analog sticks, Hall Effect triggers, and even back buttons you can customize. All of this is packed into a white body with an Xbox-like grip for longer gaming sessions.

Now, the ROG Ally X is made for players who want more power and memory. This model comes with AMD’s newer Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, a bigger 24GB memory, and double the storage at 1 TB. On top of that, the triggers have been upgraded to impulse versions, giving better feedback when playing. The battery has also been bumped from 60Wh to 80Wh, although that adds a bit more weight — the X comes in at 715 grams versus the base model’s 670g.

In terms of ports, the differences continue. The Ally has two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports and a high-speed microSD card slot, while the X model includes one USB4 port with Thunderbolt 4 compatibility for faster data and better accessory support. Both feature a combo 3.5mm jack for audio, and both keep the same shape and size, though the X is only available in black.

Each unit comes with a 65W charger and a stand included right out of the box, meaning players can set it up and play without needing extras.

Xbox Functions Meet PC Freedom

One of the major selling points of the ROG Xbox Ally lineup is how closely it sticks to the Xbox identity. From the way the console feels in the hand to how you access your games, it’s clear the design was shaped around Xbox habits. There’s a dedicated Xbox button that gives quick access to the Game Bar, and the triggers and bumpers mirror the same layout seen on Xbox controllers.

Despite that, this is still a PC under the hood. With Windows 11 pre-installed, users can treat it like any other gaming laptop. And since Xbox apps come built-in, including Game Pass, you can jump right into Xbox gaming without needing to download extra stuff. The combo of both ecosystems is what Microsoft is banking on here.

ROG Ally and the Ally X Release Date

Microsoft says both the ROG Ally and the Ally X will become available in stores during the holiday period at the end of 2025. On launch day, the handhelds are confirmed to release across 30+ countries, including the U.S., U.K., Germany, Japan, Canada, Australia, France, and more. Other regions will follow later on, though no timeline was shared yet.

The company also mentioned that more info on accessories and compatible gear will be shared closer to release. So, players looking to expand the experience with docks or controllers might want to wait for additional announcements in the coming months.

The ROG Xbox Ally line marks a major move for Microsoft, as it’s the first time the company is stepping directly into the handheld gaming space. With ASUS providing the hardware and Microsoft delivering the software and services, it’s a solid combination on paper.

Whether it can compete with other handheld PCs on the market remains to be seen, but the Xbox-first angle does give it a strong identity. As the year moves toward the holiday season, more technical details, pricing information, and accessory reveals are expected to come out. But for now, the ROG Xbox Ally stands as an exciting new step forward for both Xbox and ASUS.
