The competitive ranking system of Rocket League gives players a formal way to gauge their progress and skill level. It combines fair matching with observable skill progression and focused seasons to maintain a balance of competitiveness and reward.

Ranking Tiers and Divisions

Rocket League features an overall of eight tiers as part of the competitive ranking system: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Champion, Grand Champion, and Supersonic Legend. Every tier except Supersonic Legend has divisions (I-III) that rank players’ tier placement. New players will start unranked and need to play through ten placement matches to gain their first rank.

Supersonic Legend represents the peak of the ranking system and players of Rocket League, and unlike other ranks/tiers, divisions are not assigned to differentiate skill levels.

How Ranking Works

Every player has a ranking corresponding to their placement on the ladder, and this ranking is associated with an invisible score known as Matchmaking Rating (MMR). This score will go up when you win and down when you lose, based on the skill level of the players you face. The ranking system has an unseen number, MMR, to ensure players are matched with other players with a similar skill level to maintain the integrity of competition.

Ranks are based on consistent performance more than streakiness. Strong performances in a row might not promote you instantly, because the game assesses performance over several games to determine whether it should change your rank.

When a new ranked season begins, Rocket League implements a soft reset to everybody’s ranks. This means their ranks will appear lower than what they actually are, since Rocket League uses a player’s Matchmaking Rating (MMR) to account for their previous seasons’ performance to get back faster. Unlike many other competitive games, Rocket League does not implement rank decay, so being inactive will never demote you without activity. However, this means that a player is expected to have new placement matches if a long period of inactivity occurs.

Most Rocket League competitors fall into Gold, Platinum, and Diamond ranks. These ranks are also the most active groups in performance. In 2025, Diamond I will be one of the most populated ranks. Supersonic Legend is the most exclusive rank, with only about one percent of the player base achieving it.

This range of ranks ensures that any casual players can progress within the game but still maintain prestige within the highest ranks.

Improving your ladder rank takes mechanical skill and situational awareness. You’ll focus on making each of your aerials perfect, how to dribble, and recoveries, all the while having good communication with your teammates. Replaying games also helps find faults in your positioning or rotation. Practicing aeriling, dribbling, and recoveries in custom training modes helps develop muscle memory. Playing consistently also helps keep the flow and rhythm from match to match.

The ranking system of Rocket League does an excellent job of creating fun, fair competition in a skill-based esports game. Its ranking system is transparent, and it is clear that ranking yourself is about showing improvement slowly. This keeps it simple for newer players, rewarding veteran players who are trying to break into the top ranks, and encouraging players to improve their skills.
