Rocket League, the world’s first vehicular soccer game developed by Psyonix, is now officially free to play! This is quite exciting news, not just for fans of the genre (if we can call it that) but for esports as well. Rocket League has weathered the storm, so to speak, and is a proven quantity. It’s been around for a while, too!

It was first released in July of 2015 and is currently available on nearly any platform you can think of: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Mac OS, Linux, and, of course, Windows. Many expected it to go the F2P route a long time ago, but for whatever reason it never did. Fortunately, with its popularity possibly waning, Psyonix seized the moment and made the right call.

And naturally, whenever a game with such staggering popularity goes free, people tend to jump online and go for a test run. As a result, Rocket League set a brand-new record of one million concurrent players. Compare that to last month’s peak of under 100k, and it’s easy to call this a tremendous success. Heck, maybe that’s even putting it mildly.

Either way, it’ll be interesting to see whether Psyonix will be able to maintain this boost in popularity. They’ve also enabled cross-platform progression, so you’ll be able to play on any console or PC of your choice and still keep your progress. That, in short, is always a nice thing to have, regardless if the game is free or not.

Perks for Older Players

If you’re one of the many people who’ve already made the plunge and have invested in Rocket League, you will get a couple of in-game unlocks as compensation. This includes all Rocket League-branded DLC released before the game become F2P; “Est. 20XX” title that will display the year you started playing (a nice way to distinguish from the rest of the playerbase); over 200 Common items will now be upgraded to “Legacy” status; Dieci-Oro wheels; Golden Cosmos boost, and a Huntress Player banner.

Overall, a nice list of cosmetic goodies that should make this transition a bit less painful for those who’ve invested actual money into the game.

Unfortunately, if you’re an Xbox owner, you’ll still need Xbox Live Gold to play online. Switch and PlayStation gamers are good to go!

Finally, as if all of this wasn’t enough, you can claim the game by October 23rd and get a $10 coupon that you can invest towards any game or add-on in the Epic Games store as long as it goes for at least $14.99. Talk about a good incentive to bring people in!

You can download Rocket League free of charge on the Epic Games store right now! It’s also a fairly optimized title, so it should run on nearly any kind of hardware, given that it’s not prehistoric!
