From Project K to Riftbound

Riot Games is set to hit the scene with Riftbound, the all-new physical trading card game (TCG) based in the League of Legends universe. They planned and designed the game in December 2024, and called it “Project K” at the time. And they primarily created Riftbound to translate League of Legends’ lore and characters into a competitive card game environment.

The development team, headed by Game Director Dave Guskin and Executive Producer Chengran Chai, aimed to create a strategy-rich and accessible experience that showcased the tactical gameplay of a traditional MOBA. Riot did a ton of playtesting and utilized a lot of community feedback in order to refine the game mechanics. This includes a “ganking” element, which is similar to surprise attacks in a MOBA.

With Riftbound, it also presented Riot with an opportunity to build on their intellectual property. Now, they move into the physical tabletop gaming world to round out their success in digital gaming, animation (Arcane), and musical ventures. Riot engaged UVS Games, an experienced publisher with 17+ years developing tabletop games, to lead publishing support for the launch.

Game Overview and Features

The new League of Legends TCG, Riftbound, takes the beloved champions and lore of League of Legends and puts them into an immersive and strategic game in the fun and fast-paced format of a physical card game. This game is set to release officially in English in late October 2025. Meanwhile, it will initially launch in China in August.

This game puts a strong focus on tactical deck building and skillful play. Here, each character has different abilities and mechanics that reflect them and their role in the game. Ultimately, this results in a dynamic battlefield much like our original MOBA experience. Moreover, Riftbound gives players lots of cards to work with, including Champion Cards, Action Cards, Item Cards, and Location Cards.

The first set is called Origins and features starter decks, booster packs, and a “Proving Grounds” learn-to-play box. Beyond gameplay, Riftbound has a distinct aesthetic as it features unique, quality artwork that embodies the League of Legends universe. Along with are high-end foil treatments and designs aimed at collectors. Apart from its look and feel, players can play the game in both 1v1 and multiplayer formats, which opens the door to competitive and casual gameplay.

Riftbound’s Competitive Scene

We can see Riftbound’s competitive scene quickly develop into a colorful and functional place for players wanting to play competitively. Riot has already established competitive play with Nexus Nights every week in local game stores. Here, players can play casually, with some extras such as prize packs, to promote regular and consistent play in order to support players and grow the community. Meanwhile, the first regional event is only a few months post-English release, in December 2025.

Aside from Nexus Nights, there are more formal competitive events for Riftbound: Summoner Skirmishes. They’re going to take place one and two months after each set comes out on a three-month content release cycle. These Summoner Skirmishes are similar to something you would see at a store championship level in tournaments. And, it has prizes such as promo cards, playmats, and exclusive play sets for the top finishes. This setup creates an ongoing competitive loop that keeps players engaged and keeps them consistent from the start.
