Capcom is making a bold move with a new direction for the Resident Evil franchise. Dubbed Resident Evil: Survival Unit, the upcoming mobile-exclusive title isn’t the standard zombie-shooting horror game. Rather, it’s an actual real-time strategy (RTS) title constructed for iOS and Android that incorporates survival mechanics alongside top-down tactical play.
The game is being co-developed by Capcom, Aniplex, and South Korea’s JoyCity Corporation, and it’s promising to be something quite different from the series’ standard formula, yet still entrenched in its creepy, zombie-infested DNA.
Capcom has already announced that it’s targeting a global release in North America, Europe, Japan, Korea, and the wider Asian market. A complete gameplay reveal will be held on July 10 at 3 PM PT, and it’ll be live-streamed on YouTube. That’s when gamers will finally get a true look at how this new RTS genre plays into the Resident Evil universe.

Survival Unit is described as a “survival-horror strategy” game. But that’s not going to mean it plays like RE4 or Village. It’s not a shooter, nor a first-person thriller. Rather, think more along the lines of top-down tactical play, survivor management, resource management, base construction, and zombie hordes defeated through efficient decisions rather than actual fighting.
Others have already likened the prospective gameplay to something like Fallout Shelter or XCOM-lite mechanics but as part of a Resident Evil universe. There’s no official video so far, but teaser images indicate you’ll be commanding Raccoon City-style maps with groups of characters attempting to survive.
Who’s Behind It?
The partnership is intriguing:
Capcom – ensuring it will feel truly Resident Evil
Aniplex – presumably handling narrative and character creation
JoyCity – the mobile strategy veterans behind previous games such as Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War
These three suggest that the game could be something more than a cash-grab mobile sequel. If anything, it appears Capcom is attempting to craft something refined.
What’s Next: Dates for Resident Evil: Survival Unit’s Launch Process
Here’s what to expect:
- July 10 Reveal – Full gameplay demo and developer commentary.
- Pre-registration Launch – Highly probable to go live on the same day for both Android and iOS.
- Beta or Early Access – Capcom may release limited tests before the full global launch.

Resident Evil: Survival Unit may be either way. It may very well be some sort of experimental spinoff that disappears into mobile obscurity, or it may indeed become a surprise hit if it manages to balance strategy and the series’ hallmark tension and fear. It’s unusual, yes. But sometimes that’s exactly what a long-running franchise needs.
If Capcom and its partners get the mechanics right, and if the atmosphere feels authentically Resident Evil, then this might be the most unexpected but welcome shake-up the series has seen in years.
