Resident Evil Re:Verse’s Rise and Fall

Resident Evil Re:Verse was born out of a desire to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the legendary Resident Evil franchise as a multiplayer spin-off. In early 2021, at the Resident Evil Village showcase, Capcom announced it as a standalone PvP deathmatch game that was free and available to anyone who owned Resident Evil Village. Moreover, they intended to provide a unique PvP experience to fans, including a number of characters across the series.

Re:Verse is a cool idea, but delays keep happening. They planned its initial debut with Resident Evil Village in May 2021. But they postponed it to October 28, 2022, at the same release time for Resident Evil Village Gold Edition. Moreover, Resident Evil Re:Verse had kind of a rocky road to development and release. And that doesn’t help when considering how some players reacted to its long-term viability. Issues cut short an open beta in April 2021, indicating some of the problems the game faced during its development.

Digital storefronts removed the game in March 2025. And recently, Capcom officially shut down the servers on June 29, 2025, at which point the game was fully finished.

Why Did Re:Verse Lose Its Spark?

There are a few main reasons for Resident Evil Re:Verse’s shutdown after nearly three years of service. And, it is related to the agreement, purpose, and reception of the game. Re:Verse received more player support than Capcom expected, yet they said it has “served its original, celebratory purpose very well,” and the franchise has now “reached a new turning point.” This only means that Capcom is now taking a different direction with this type of multiplayer game.

After its launch, Re:Verse received overwhelmingly negative reviews, as shown by an OpenCritic score of 38/100 and poor user reviews on Steam and Xbox Store. A common theme of negative reviews was boring gameplay, few maps and game modes, the style of combat was boring and shallow compared to Resident Evil main titles, thus not engaging players, etc. Re:Verse was not able to reach the success and notoriety of the previously multiplayer Resident Evil titles, like Resistance. Ultimately, it immediately lost players without recovering from that poor reception.

Capcom’s choice to stop service also coincides with its strategic change to focus on single-player offerings and remaking past titles. It was always just a limited-time celebration of the franchise. And now, with its original goal accomplished, Capcom decided for Resident Evil Re:Verse to shut down and reallocate resources.

Capcom’s Next Moves for Resident Evil

Capcom has now permanently shut Resident Evil Re:Verse down. This indicates a strategic shift that involves focusing solely on the traditional Resident Evil games since they have a handful of bigger Resident Evil titles planned for 2025 and beyond. The highlight of this strategic refocus is Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline game in the franchise. Capcom officially announced that Requiem will release on February 27, 2026. This game looks like a tremendous return to the Crime Story gameplay and overarching narrative of the Resident Evil series.

Conclusion

Resident Evil Re:Verse’s shutdown might feel like a blow. However, it is a fresh beginning for Capcom and a new beginning for the Resident Evil series. As the memories of Re:Verse fade away, Resident Evil fans should expect some exciting new projects down the pipeline. So the shutdown is not necessarily an end, but a reboot. Ultimately, it’s a reminder that in a world of biohazards, you just have to go with the flow. So long, Re:Verse!
