In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the iconic Age of Empires RTS series, Microsoft and Red Bull have announced a $550,000 LAN tournament set to be held at the Heidelberg Castle.

The 11th-century German castle will play host to the sixth edition of the Red Bull Wololo tournament in October, where 40 of the top Age of Empires players will face off in the title’s second major LAN event.

Red Bull announces Wololo: Legacy

In a statement released on May 19, Red Bull laid out the roadmap for the sixth edition of Wololo. While the previous Wololo competitions have only focused on Age of Empires II, Wololo VI will also feature Age of Empires: Definitive Edition and Age of Empires IV.

The event will see in a nine-day tournament at Heidelberg Castle, running between October 21 and 30. There will be a $300,000 prize pool for Ages of Empires IV, $200,000 for Age of Empires II, and $50,000 for Age of Empires.

Red Bull have already announced that four previous Wololo winners, including the most-decorated Age of Empires player Ørjan “TheViper” Larsen, will be given automatic qualification to the Age of Empires II event. The rest of the attendees will earn their spots across various events over the course of 2022. The other past Wololo winners invited include Wololo I winner Gan “Yo” Yangfan, two-time winner Kai “Liereyy” Kallinger, and Wololo III champion Darko “DauT” Dautovic.

The Wololo series, which began in 2020, has been seen as a much-needed breath of life for the Age of Empires esports scene. While popular and well-contested, Red Bull’s involvement helped elevate the esport to a much bigger audience.

Wololo VI will feature the largest prize pool yet, with the $200,000 pool for Age of Empires II alone double the prize awarded at Wololo V in September 2021.

Open qualification for Age of Empires II begins in August, while Age of Empires IV’s open qualifiers are set for early June.
