Rainbow Six Europe Major – Day 2 Review

The miracle run of Virtus.pro has come to an end today in two close matches against G2 Esports and BDS Esport. Having qualified through the Upper Bracket, G2 enter the Grand Finals with a map advantage against BDS. 

G2 2-0 VIRTUS.PRO

G2 continue to sweep the competition at the European Major. Following a strong display against BDS, they were now able to set themselves on top of Virtus.pro. The two teams first met on Villa. There, G2 were able to establish themselves as favorites early on already, securing all 6 rounds of the first half. Then, VP struck back with a comeback and collected four rounds for themselves. Only the shotgun of Niclas “Pengu” Mouritzen managed to seal the deal for G2. They closed Villa out on a 7-5 scoreline.

On Kafe, VP finally managed to secure rounds in the first half. With a 4-2 lead, they felt comfortable going into the offensive. There, they quickly found out that G2 were dead serious. The team soon surpassed Virtus.pro and took the lead. Ben “CTZN” McMillan ended the match with a quad kill.

BDS 2-0 VP

After yesterday’s massive performance versus Rogue, VP were unable to impress against G2 today. Their survival in the tournament now hung by a thread. But BDS were determined to book the Grand Finals ticket themselves. The Frenchmen quickly climbed to a 4-2 lead on the defensive side of Consulate. VP were only able to score points with two Garage/Cafeteria holds, but after that, they conceded the map on a 4-7 scoreline.

On Oregon, the game went down a similar route, only this time BDS led with 5-1 at halftime. Again, the players around Pavel “p4sh4” Kosenko had to bring it back on the defense. BDS were unfortunately much too strong and again, the VP side had to let go of the map on a 4-7 scoreline. Olivier “Renshiro” Vandroux was the strongest performer on the BDS camp once more. This time, however, Loïc “BriD” Chongthep settled down at the top of the scoreboard as well. Both achieved ratings above 1.3. Virtus.pro were unable to play the DarkZero imitation game and had to leave the tournament after two soul-crushing losses.

With BriD, BDS may finally have gathered enough star power to win the Grand Finals against G2. In any case, the Frenchmen surely don’t want to repeat their Opening Match against the team, where they lost decisively. To BDS’ disadvantage, G2 already hold a map lead in the Grand Finals, having arrived from the Upper Bracket. Tomorrow, we will witness these two teams clash for a chance at the Rainbow Six Major trophy.
