Here’s something that came out of left field: Qualcomm, one of the world’s leading semiconductor companies, and Razer are working on a handheld gaming console! Talk about a match made in heaven! Better yet, it’ll be based on the upcoming Snapdragon G3X, an SoC that’ll pack an incredible amount of power — just perfect for those looking to game on the go!

Details are still scarce (to say the least), but we do have a few interesting tidbits to sink our teeth into. First of all, Qualcomm’s novel Snapdragon 8 Gen1 is geared towards flagship Android smartphones and the like. The G3x, on the other hand, is being developed with notebooks and handheld gaming consoles in mind, which means it’ll require beefier cooling solutions and will, therefore, be a lot more powerful.

A Ton of Potential

The prototype pictured above will reportedly come with a 120Hz OLED display (with HDR support) along with a humongous 6000mAh battery. The G3x platform is “designed for innovation in handheld gaming” and will support 5G mmWave as well. This, along with Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, a 1080p webcam, and a multi-functional USB-C port should result in a portable gaming console unlike any other, and also a device that’ll probably fly off the shelves!

Razer and Qualcomm aren’t pulling any punches here and, well, it’s easy to understand why — they’re all racing to reach the market with full-fledged, feature rich products and beat their closest competitors to the punch. And, well, with Valve’s Steam Deck being right around the corner, it seems that portable gaming is entering a sort of renaissance!

As expected, this handheld gaming console from Razer will also support a slew of streaming services like Xbox Game Cloud and GeForce NOW. Streaming from your PC/console over Wi-Fi will also be supported.

Interestingly enough, there’s a very good chance that the Snapdragon G3x is the M1 competitor we recently talked about. That, if true, means that the ARM battle is going to heat up a lot sooner than expected and we, the consumers, are bound to benefit the most!

Unfortunately that’s about all we have at this point in time. Everything else is still under embargo, but it should be lifted in a few weeks’ (if not days) time.

So, if this fascinating device has managed to pique your interest, you definitely have something to look forward to! As always, we’ll be back with more coverage, so stay tuned!
