PUBG’s Winter Overhaul: Update 39.1 “Erangel: Subzero”, New Skins, More

PUBG Update 39.1 brings with it what might be one of the boldest seasonal transformations to PUBG: Battlegrounds, freezing over the classic map Erangel and layering in major cosmetic, gameplay, and meta-system changes. The update is now live on PC, with console rollout scheduled shortly.

Frozen Battleground: Erangel Subzero

The classic Erangel has been reimagined as Erangel: Subzero, featuring dramatic environmental changes with snowfall accumulation, icy terrain, and a Blue Zone enhanced with a freezing effect that adds new survival pressure.

The visuals have changed in several ways: many regions, including crash-site wrecks from fallen satellites, frozen water bodies such as rivers and boatyards, and updated aircraft visuals contribute toward giving it an overall bleak, wintry feel.

This means that familiar combat zones will act differently for players; one may need to change looting patterns, traversal strategies, and fight tactics to account for terrain hazards and environmental effects.

New Cosmetics & Progression

Progressive Skin for AWM

This update brings one new progressive weapon skin: Faded Ghost: AWM and Chroma-finish variant Faded Ghost: AWM (Mocha Beige).

  • What makes it “progressive”: the skin levels up according to in-game kills or assists, rewarding active usage over time, a feature that grants cosmetic evolution rather than a static look.
  • Acquisition: It is available through the December Contraband Crate with a 50% discount on the first 10 open packs, or directly from the in-game Scrap Broker.

Survivor Pass: Erangel Subzero

Along with the map rework and the new skin, PUBG has released Survivor Pass: Erangel Subzero, the winter-themed battle pass for this patch.

The following have been added with the adjustments to the Premium Pass: a 50% BP boost, and previous BP boost rewards, as well as several older Contraband-Coupon & key-rewards, have been removed or replaced.

Availability: On PC, the pass went live on December 3 (post-maintenance) and runs until December 31st (UTC). Console availability begins from December 11th to January 8th, 2026.

Note: Due to legal restrictions, Survivor Pass is not available in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Broader Systems & Mode Enhancements

Beyond map and skins, Update 39.1 brings key gameplay systems and feature changes.

UGC Alpha returns now as a permanent offering, featuring expanded tools-new buildings, destructible objects, and functional devices such as smoke, lighting, AI spawn, vending machines, and more. This enables custom modes and fresh creative possibilities.

Weapon balance adjustments are also part of this update; for instance, vertical/horizontal recoil tweaks to the following guns: M416, AUG, SKS, and SLR.

Mode-specific changes: Spawn kits, care packages, and default loadouts in Arcade Team Deathmatch and Intense Battle Royale have been updated. New “Recall” system and Emergency Cover Flare are added to IBR mode.

Concluding Thoughts

Update 39.1 is a milestone update for PUBG: Battlegrounds, merging a chilling environmental overhaul with carefully structured gameplay, cosmetic, and systems changes. This will not merely be a simple cosmetic reskin of Erangel but a reimagination of terrain, atmosphere, and player tactics. Meanwhile, the introduction of the progressive Faded Ghost AWM skin, the refreshed Survivor Pass, and deeper system updates reflect a commitment by developers to keep the game dynamic, rewarding, and community-focused.
