After more than a decade, there seem to be fresh rumours making its rounds about Prototype, and it is said to be based on leaks from within Activision. Fans have found some reasons that are making them speculate that Prototype 3 could be in some sort of secretive development. This news is surely keeping the limelight because the name of Alex Mercer is being brought up again.
Is Alex Mercer Somehow Coming Back?
One of the shocking things about these leaks is maybe Alex Mercer may indeed return as the protagonist. First reported by Insider Gaming, a post on Reddit asserted that Activision had conducted focus testing groups early this year, although it was taken down as soon as it came online. The real aim of the tests was not just to determine whether or not they should make the game. Some say it was likely to gain feedback for a game already in development.
The leaks tell that Mercer will be using his shapeshifting powers once again to enter enemy territory and carry out destruction. They say the city will be New York again, as with the previous titles. So, it might be a fresh story but still latches onto the beginning of the series. But it is not clear anymore whether this will be a Prototype 3 in a brand-new edition, or a remake of the first one, or if it will even be a combination of the two.

Reviving a long-dormant franchise like Prototype would require deep investment and strong confidence. That could explain why a remaster or remake is a safer initial path—lower production costs, proven IP—before greenlighting a full-scale sequel.
Hopefully, the game will come to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Fans have been waiting for an all-out redesign with luscious graphics and controls. Microsoft/Activision has been busy hiring for technical, animation, and gameplay roles at various studios like High Moon, Infinity Ward, and their new Warsaw-based narrative studio, Elsewhere Entertainment. While none explicitly mention Prototype, these hires reveal capacity and intent to develop open-world, narrative-heavy AAA that fit a revived Prototype aesthetic.
History of the Prototype Franchise
Released in 2009, Prototype built itself a name with a darker story and fast-paced action. The second game in the series, Prototype 2 (2012), while mechanically refined—with stronger visuals and polished combat—sparked mixed feelings. It earned generally favorable reviews, though critics criticized its repetitive missions and less engaging narrative. However, it failed to sell enough copies and no further sequel has seen the light of day ever since.

Conclusion
So with all this excitement around, there has not been a word yet from Activision. So, while all of this has got fans on the loose, it is still better to be careful until actual announcements appear. Even though, these talks have revived a burning passion in quite a few.
