The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has officially issued a rating for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. The game has received a “T” rating for Teen, matching the age classification of the original 2003 release.
While no release date has been announced so far, the appearance of an ESRB rating is often one of the final steps before launch-prompting renewed hope among fans that the remake could finally be approaching release.
A remake with a long and difficult development history
The remake was originally announced back in 2020, but its journey since then has been anything but smooth. Initial development was handled by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, before Ubisoft decided to reboot the project entirely.
Development responsibilities were later transferred to Ubisoft Montreal, the studio behind the original Sands of Time. The project was restarted from scratch, with Ubisoft Toronto also joining development efforts.
Since the reboot, Ubisoft has remained largely quiet, offering only limited updates on progress.
Leaked gameplay hinted at major changes
Last year, a leaked internal gameplay presentation gave fans a rare glimpse of the remake’s direction. The footage reportedly showed motion capture sessions, early gameplay segments, and internal discussions about design changes.
Among the most notable points was an updated portrayal of Farah, with adjustments made to her character compared to the original game. The leak also suggested that the remake could include new locations, expanding beyond the environments seen in the 2003 classic.
Is the release finally close?
Despite the ESRB rating, Ubisoft has yet to confirm a launch window for The Sands of Time Remake. Given the game’s history of delays and restarts, caution remains warranted. Still, official classification by the ESRB is a significant milestone-and one that often precedes marketing pushes or release announcements.
For now, fans of the Prince of Persia series can only wait for Ubisoft to make its next move, hoping that this long-awaited remake will finally see the light of day.
