The roster of Pokemon Unite has now expanded with the addition of Mega Charizard X and a new, aggressive style of play in this popular team-based battle title. Mega Charizard X presents a very powerful character for players who enjoy close-range combat that is much more streamlined than the typical branching builds in other Pokémon builds.

Players can receive Mega Charizard X’s Unite Licence for free through several events that will be available in-game until November 14. Completing several event missions will net you the licence without the need for Aeos Coins or Gems. This means players of all skill levels can try Mega Charizard X without managing the relative complexity of other forms. After the event concludes, the licence will be sent to the in-game store and will be available for normal purchasing. The fact that the Mega Charizard X Unite Licence is only available for a limited time incentivizes players to participate for the time being.

Overview of Build and Playstyle

Mega Charizard X’s design intends to have damage at close range and offensive pressure. Mega Charizard X’s basic moveset includes Fire Punch and Flare Blitz, both of which further extend Mega Charizard X’s offensive capabilities. The ability known as Solar Power increases attack power over time, reducing health, further encouraging risk-taking and precise positioning of Mega Charizard X in gameplay.

Seismic Slam, the Pokémon’s Unite Move, is a sudden burst of power that does critical hits, self-heals from Tough Claws, and increases damage output. Combined, these features turn Mega Charizard X into a brawler that can swing team fights through sustained pressure and quick game eliminations.

Impact on the Meta

The addition of Mega Charizard X is the first step in realizing high-tempo, frontline-heavy metas. Although this has a simplified build that reduces the need for complex decision-making, this will resonate with players who enjoy fast and decisive play. However, it does come with the caveat that anything can go south in the blink of an eye without aggressive positioning. In any case, even teams needing to engage Mega Charizard X will need to have a plan together to counter its massive amounts of damage and sustain without going down in the process.

The addition of Mega Charizard X represents a new wrinkle in the evolving roster in Pokémon Unite. It’s an event licence, so it will not take new players too long to achieve, and will reward players new and old with a more concentrated sense of combat that hasn’t been available with the current attackers in Pokémon Unite.
