In the Pokémon Legends Z-A game, players again begin their journey with the three original Kanto starters, namely Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. At first glance, this seems like an easy nostalgic choice but it actually has quite an influence on how your early and mid-game plays out. Each Pokémon has its own positives, but some become increasingly positive depending on how early Mega Evolutions appear in the storyline.
The Mega Evolution Timing
How Access Changes the Game
Mega Evolutions play a considerable role in the game of Legends Z-A, but they are not available all at the same time. Charizard and Blastoise gain their Mega Stones way before Venusaur. This small difference makes Bulbasaur more difficult to play with than the other two.
Charizard
Charizard can Mega Evolve to X or Y forms, giving it more options and early power in battles.

Blastoise
Blastoise will have its access to Mega form early since the Mega Stone can be purchased in the early stages.

Venusaur
Venusaur will only have access to the Venusaurite later, meaning it lags behind the other two Pokémon by having access to Mega Evolve much later.

Venusaur will miss some of the key points that Mega Evolution has the most power and use due to the fact that it gains Mega Evolution later on in the game. By the time Venusaurite is gained, you may find that your team is vested in stronger Pokémon instead.
Why Bulbasaur Still Has Value

Although it is the hardest decision, Bulbasaur does have some small positives.
- Free Mega Stone – Venusaurite comes from the story itself so you don’t have to spend money like the other choices.
- Challenge Appeal – If you enjoy harder runs, Bulbasaur will be more interesting and rewarding for you.
- Unique Typing – Grass/Poison typing has different resistances and some minor benefits early in the fight.
These things don’t equal having a Mega form that is late game, but it is some small balance for a player who picks Bulbasaur just because he likes it or wants the challenge.
Final Recommendation

If you want to have a strong and balanced start, Charmander is easily the best choice. Charmander has early dual Mega forms and an easy attack stat that makes it easily the most flexible starter. Squirtle is also a reliable choice, that maintains its defensive nature through all evolutions. Bulbasaur is a good choice for the player who prefers a slower growth or strategy in their play style over just power.
Starter Tips

- Before making a decision, consider the composition of your team first.
- Fund your early Mega Stones.
- Adjust your in-game strategy based on how fast your starter Pokémon evolves.
Each pick is a little different, but knowing how to time Mega Evolutions will truly alter your Pokémon Legends – Z-A experience.
