Sony Interactive Entertainment has launched a new phase of its global “It Happens on PS5” campaign, placing some of the console’s biggest current and upcoming games at the center of its latest marketing push.
The campaign introduces a new hero advertisement built around exaggerated gaming moments while expanding into physical installations and local activations around the world.
Marvel’s Wolverine receives particularly strong attention ahead of its September 15 release, while Grand Theft Auto VI, God of War Laufey and 007 First Light are among the other games Sony is using to reinforce the PS5 lineup.
PlayStation focuses on memorable gaming moments
The new advertisement continues the concept behind “It Happens on PS5” rather than introducing an entirely different campaign.
Sony’s approach is built around transforming recognizable gaming situations into exaggerated real-world scenes. The new video moves rapidly between these moments, including basketball sequences featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo and a high-speed jet ski chase.
The campaign highlights:
- Major games already available across the PS5 ecosystem
- Upcoming first-party and third-party releases
- Larger-than-life interpretations of recognizable gaming experiences
The idea is less about explaining individual game mechanics and more about selling the PS5 ecosystem as the place where unusual and memorable experiences happen.
Sony is effectively using the diversity of the PS5 library itself as the central character of the campaign.
Marvel’s Wolverine leads the upcoming lineup
Marvel’s Wolverine is positioned as one of the campaign’s most important upcoming releases.
Insomniac Games’ action title launches exclusively for PS5 on September 15, putting it less than a month away from release when the new campaign begins.
Sony is supporting that launch with physical promotions in several countries.
France will receive Marvel’s Wolverine challenge pods, while an Australian activation is themed around Berserker Mode. Larger-than-life Sentinel head installations are also planned for the United Kingdom, Canada and Spain.
| Game | Role in PS5 campaign |
|---|---|
| Marvel’s Wolverine | Major upcoming first-party release |
| GTA VI | High-profile third-party blockbuster |
| God of War Laufey | Future PlayStation Studios title |
| 007 First Light | Major cinematic action release |
These installations extend the campaign beyond traditional video advertising and social media.
They also give Wolverine a particularly visible position in PlayStation’s marketing calendar immediately before launch.
GTA VI strengthens the third-party message
Grand Theft Auto VI is another major name featured in Sony’s campaign.
Its inclusion is significant because the game is not a PlayStation Studios production. Instead, it demonstrates how Sony is using major third-party releases alongside its own franchises to promote the overall appeal of PS5.
That same strategy applies to other titles featured across PlayStation’s current marketing.
The campaign is therefore not attempting to present PS5 exclusively through first-party games. Sony is combining internal franchises with some of the largest multiplatform releases available on the console.
The wider selection includes:
- First-party franchises such as Marvel’s Wolverine and God of War
- Major external releases such as Grand Theft Auto VI
- Established PS5 titles spanning action, sports, shooters and family games
This broader approach gives Sony more flexibility than a campaign centered entirely around one exclusive.
God of War Laufey represents PlayStation’s future
God of War Laufey provides another important first-party element.
Sony Santa Monica revealed the game earlier in 2026, expanding the God of War universe through a story focused on Laufey.
Unlike Marvel’s Wolverine, the title does not yet carry the same immediate release proximity. Its inclusion instead helps Sony communicate what lies further ahead for PlayStation Studios.
That distinction matters for the campaign.
Wolverine can sell the immediate PS5 lineup, while projects such as God of War Laufey provide a reason to look beyond the next few months.
Sony is effectively mixing games at different stages of their lifecycle rather than building the advertisement around a single release window.
Physical activations expand around the world
The most interesting aspect of the campaign may be what happens outside conventional advertising.
Sony says “It Happens on PS5” will appear through creators, installations and local activations internationally.
Different regions will receive game-inspired experiences based on recognizable PlayStation moments. The Wolverine installations are currently the clearest examples, but Sony has indicated that other locations will feature celebrations based on fan-favorite PS5 games.
This creates a campaign designed to move between online video, social content and physical spaces rather than functioning as a single television advertisement.
It also gives PlayStation the ability to adapt promotions to individual markets.
Assessment
The new “It Happens on PS5” campaign arrives at a useful moment for Sony.
PS5 is now deep into its console generation, so the marketing challenge has changed. Sony no longer needs to explain what the hardware is. Instead, it needs to reinforce why players should continue investing time and money in its ecosystem.
Marvel’s Wolverine gives the campaign an immediate first-party centerpiece, while GTA VI provides enormous mainstream recognition. God of War Laufey extends the message further into PlayStation’s future.
The global installations are also a notable part of the strategy. They turn familiar game imagery into physical marketing moments that can circulate online far beyond the locations where they appear.
Rather than selling PS5 through specifications, Sony is selling it through experiences. “It Happens on PS5” is designed to make those experiences look impossible to ignore.
