The year is not over yet, and the controversies in the video game industry continue. The purchase of Activision Blizzard depends on what the European Union and the United Kingdom say.

Sony is the primary opponent to closing this acquisition; however, this time comes the information indicating that PlayStation executives are not very worried about Xbox Game Pass.

Sony: Xbox Game Pass is no match for PlayStation

According to reports, Jim Ryan would have assured his employees in a question-and-answer conference that Xbox Game Pass is not competition for PlayStation.

Faced with the fear shown by some of his employees with the video game subscription service, Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony, maintains:

“When we think about Game Pass, it (the service’s numbers) seems to be going down (relative to subscribers). When we think about Game Pass, we’ve sold more PS5 in two years than they’ve collected in subscribers, and they’ve been doing it for 6-7 years.”

“We’re shy of 50 million subscribers, and they’re in the low 20 million, but there’s more work to do to grow that number.”

Sony’s position on the acquisition of Activision Blizzard

Sony’s place on the Activision Blizzard purchase agreement from Microsoft is somewhat confusing. The first we heard in this context was a speech against Microsoft as they thought they might have too much power, and the game was exclusive to Xbox.

Microsoft gave a response to make the purchase go forward, announcing a 10-year agreement with Sony. In addition, they offered to let Call of Duty games come out on PlayStation during that time. But, on the other hand, it refused to say yes, continuing to oppose the Xbox deal.

Sony CEO Jim Ryan is not afraid of Microsoft, considering that Xbox Game Pass is no competition for Sony, at least in sales/subscribers.

How many subscribers does Xbox Game Pass have?

Game Pass has only been on the market for five years, born on June 1, 2017. In terms of subscribers, Xbox confirmed earlier this year that it stood at around 25 million subscribers.

On the other hand, PlayStation told its regulators that they believed Xbox Game Pass would have managed to surpass 29 million users.

Doubts on regulators

Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard and King has raised serious concerns among regulators worldwide. They agree that this purchase will create a monopoly situation where Microsoft will eliminate competition.

It is estimated that, when the company is in its hands, it will give it a significant advantage over rivals such as Sony.

The Japanese company expresses its concern every chance it gets. Praising Call of Duty and claiming that if the game is from Microsoft, gamers will migrate from PlayStation to Xbox to play such games.
