The Legends Stage of the PGL Major Antwerp 2022 concluded on May 17, with the eight remaining teams moving onto the Champions Stage.

After the (bugged) smoke had cleared on the Legends Stage, eight teams remained in contention at the PGL Major Antwerp. While some of the teams who qualified for the Champions stage will come as no surprise to fans, the Legends stage played host to a number of twists and shocks.

NAVI crusies; Team Spirit soars

To no one’s surprise, CS:GO titans Natus Vincere are advancing into the Champions Stage. After a tight 19-17 victory over G2 Esports in their first match, NAVI crushed BIG 16-8 and took a comfortable 2-1 win against Ninjas in Pyjamas to secure a spot in the Champions Stage. While the clash with G2, as well as their dropped second game against NIP, showed that NAVI are still human, their Legends Stage performance clearly showed why they are a tournament favourite.

However, Team Spirit may have stolen the title of the Team of the Stage. After qualifying as the final team out of the European RMR, they battled their way to a fourth-place finish in the Challengers. They followed with wins over FURIA and Heroic before dominating Copenhagen Flames to finish the Legends stage with a 3-0 record and becoming the Champions Stage’s top seeding due to the tiebreak system introduced at PGL Major Stockholm last year.

Debut blues for Cloud9

Antwerp was meant to be the triumphant return to Counter Strike for Cloud9. After acquiring Gambit Esport’s roster in April, their journey would begin in the Legends stage. It would also be where the journey ended, as Cloud9 went 1-3, crashing out of the tournament.

Fellow Legends qualifier BIG are also headed home after going 1-3.

Heroic, FURIA, & Copenhagen Flames qualify on final day

Six teams battled it out on the final day of the stage for the remaining three spots in the Champions Stage. Heroic held off a valiant comeback effort from Team Vitality; FURIA ended the dominant tournament run of G2; and Copehagen Flames swept Imperial to close out the final day of play.

Team Spirit, Navi, ENCE, NIP, FaZe Clan, Heroic, FURIA, and Copenhagen Flames will face off in the single-elimination Champions Stage starting May 19.
