Is the storm here with us in the room? That’s the question asked to the ESL Challenger League S48 team, Perseverance Gaming, following their disqualification from the tournament.

A controversial attempt to reschedule a match has shocked the ESL and its viewers. On July 30, 2024, the ESL Challenger League announced they had disqualified Perseverance from the league. In addition to this, the team and players will have to face a two-month suspension from all EFG pro competitions.

The Perseverance Disqualified Scandal Unfolds

“Perseverance Gaming submitted false evidence to mislead the tournament administration in an effort to have an ESL Challenger League match rescheduled,” the ESL Pro Tour officials announced. This violation led to the team’s immediate disqualification from the current season and a two-month suspension for the team and its players from all ESL FACEIT Group (EFG) pro competitions.

Dust2.us investigation revealed the extent of the deception. Sources close to the team disclosed that the team aimed to fake a power issue caused by weather at player Cory Frymark’s or most known as “Shutout” house. It is said that Perseverance wanted an emergency reschedule for their July 18th match against Mythic.

The team’s alleged motivation behind this subterfuge was to ensure they could play with “Nooz”, or Nelvin Gonzales, instead of Chance “xaler” Palmer. On July 24th, Xaler was officially kicked from Perseverance. Unable to field Nooz by the original match date, the team reportedly fabricated the threat of a power outage to convince Zyrus “Osodank” Bechstein, an ECL admin, to reschedule their match.

Evidence of Deception

ECL Discord screenshots verified by Dust2.us, showed a shutout attempt to convince Osodank of the incoming “inclement weather”. Perseverance submitted a weather doppler radar image from Apple, a weather report, and a power advisory from Shutout’s “power company” as evidence. However, this fabricated evidence quickly fell apart under scrutiny.

The glaring spelling error in the alleged power company text raised suspicions. The message contained “expierence” instead of “experience”. As the investigation dug in, they found out the phone number that sent the alert message belonged to Gabriel “Gabe” Shah. Furthermore, nearby Wilmington Airport weather data proves that it is unlikely to have widespread power outages in their area.

As a result of their actions, five members of Perseverance Gaming faced severe consequences. The players in the roster have been banned from organized events of ESL FACEIT Group for two months, effectively derailing their competitive aspirations for the near future.

The Perseverance disqualified scandal has sent shockwaves through the North American CS2 scene. The scandal might have hit some spots, as people now question the competitive integrity of teams. Moving forward, the incident may serve as a reminder for organizations to maintain honesty and ensure fair play in esports.

It is noteworthy that ESL has been swift and decisive in imposing punishment against Perseverance for its ploy. This just shows the organization’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of their tournaments. The ruling on this instance will be a precedent for similar infractions they might handle in the future.

Conclusion

It’ll be gloomy in the next two months for this team as they face the league’s sanctions. The Perseverance disqualified incident should serve as a cautionary tale for other teams and players to adhere to the rulebook.

The road to redemption for Perseverance Gaming seems to be a dark road. Following the ban, the organization has already dropped the roster, so the players’ futures remain uncertain for now. The ECL tournament, on the other hand, will resume without team Perseverance. However, the shadow of the issue may linger over the competition for quite some time.
