The ESL Challenger at DreamHack Melbourne 2022 has concluded and the winners are the Brazilians from paiN Gaming. Few people would have predicted this result, but their win was fully deserved.

This ESL Challenger featured eight teams, some of which are tier-1 competitors. The favorites ahead of the tournament were OG and Imperial Esports, but neither of them managed to outplay paiN.

DreamHack Melbourne 2022 results

DreamHack Melbourne had two stages: groups and playoffs. In the group stage, the double-elimination format should have favored the European and North American teams, but it didn’t. Both OG and Evil Geniuses got eliminated. The same thing happened to the Oceania teams, Grayhound and VERTEX ESC.

In the semifinals, Imperial played against Entropiq and won with ease, while paiN played against Wings Up Gaming, a Chinese team, and won despite the challenges. In both cases, the final score was 2-0.

Grand Final

The Grand Final of DreamHack Melbourne 2022 was very exciting and started with a map that required two rounds of overtime to conclude.

Unfortunately for Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo’s team, paiN Gaming had Felipe “skullz” Medeiros, who overperformed significantly on this map, finishing with a K-D score of 30-23 and an ADR of 95.

Meanwhile, the best player on Imperial was Ricardo “boltz” Prass, who had a K-D score of 25-24. What was remarkable on Overpass was the fact that Imperial’s players had very similar scores, while paiN Gaming played around a few players and enabled them to carry the team. The final score was 17-19 in favor of paiN.

The second map, Nuke, was extremely one-sided. FalleN had one of the best performances of this season, ending with a rating 2.0 of 1.71 and a K-D score of 24-8. It felt as though he was hitting every single shot. On the T side, paiN still managed to get six rounds, but on the CT side, they only got one. The final score was 16-7.

The match was decided on Dust II, where, once again, skullz had an excellent performance, along with his teammate Wesley “hardzao” Lopes. Both of them finished with excellent scores and secured the title for paiN Gaming.

FalleN would have probably loved to add a new trophy to his name, but he fought a rival Brazilian team that was in great shape. The former superstar, who won multiple Majors and S-tier tournaments in his career, has only won one trophy in the last five years.

Given his age (31), he probably still has a few more years to play CS:GO professionally. But this defeat will surely hurt for a while.
