No new Call of Duty game coming in 2023

It looks like Activision Blizzard will not be releasing an edition of Call of Duty in 2023. This makes it the first time in almost 20 years that a Call of Duty won’t be released regularly every 1 year.

Microsoft could be to blame for this. As we’ve already reported, Microsoft has bought problem company Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion. The purchase is not yet completely through, but should be completed in June 2023. However, the purchase could postpone Call of Duty again if things go wrong. Then, with a lot of bad luck, we might not see the release until 2024.

No new game – new content nonetheless

Still, Call of Duty fans won’t go empty-handed this year: “We have an exciting lineup of premium and free-to-play Call of Duty experiences planned for this year, next year and the year after,” Activision said in a statement. “Reports of anything else are false. We look forward to sharing more details when the time is right.”

According to the report, Activision wants to prevent Call of Duty titles from conflicting with later releases. The company believes that has contributed to Vanguard’s poor sales since its launch in 2021.

Call of Duty: Vanguard was released last year with disappointing sales and a series of technical issues. Search-and-destroy bugs and audio issues hampered the launch of the Call of Duty League’s 2022 season. Many pro gamers have said they hope Microsoft changes the way Call of Duty is developed.

Uncertainty for the Call of Duty League

It’s unclear what this news means for the Call of Duty League. It could be that teams will play on Vanguard or Modern Warfare 2 for another year. We could see major changes to the way the league is run, similar to how Overwatch 2 changes the number of tank players on Overwatch League teams.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be released in the fall of 2022. It will be a direct sequel to Modern Warfare 2019 and is being developed by Infinity Ward. The game, along with Warzone 2, has been “developed from the ground up,” according to Activision. Both games are being developed with a new game engine. A separate, yet-to-be revealed free-to-play title is expected to be released sometime in 2022. At the moment, nothing is known about the new title.
