Summary:

  • The original version of the Nintendo Switch became the company’s best-selling console after reaching 155.37 million units sold.
  • Switch also has surpassed the Nintendo DS’ record for lifetime sales, which was 154.02 million units.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 has also broken sales records and became Nintendo’s fastest-selling console in just nine months after its launch, selling 17.37 million units.

Nintendo has hit another big achievement. The Nintendo Switch has sold more units than the Nintendo DS, making it Nintendo’s best-selling console ever. At the same time, the Nintendo Switch 2 is breaking records as the fastest-selling console Nintendo has released. These successes show that Nintendo is doing very well as it moves into its next generation of consoles.

Nintendo Switch Overtakes the DS

The Nintendo Switch has now sold more units than the Nintendo DS. According to Nintendo’s latest report, the Switch reached 155.37 million sales worldwide by the end of 2025, while the DS sold 154.02 million units in total.

This means the Nintendo Switch is now Nintendo’s best-selling console ever. The DS held this record for many years, but the Switch’s ability to work as both a home console and a handheld helped it become even more popular.

Additionally, the Switch is now the second best-selling console of all time. It sits next to Sony’s PlayStation 2, released in March 2000.

Nintendo Switch 2 Becomes the Fastest-Selling Console

The Switch 2 version is also breaking sales records. It sold 17.37 million units in just nine months after its release which makes it Nintendo’s fastest-selling console ever. For comparison, the original Switch took longer to sell 15 million, and the Wii U only sold 13.56 million in its entire life.

The Switch 2 is selling well mainly because of its games, which draw in both old and new players and fans. Titles like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A already have large fanbases, and many people bought the Switch 2 just to play these games. For existing Switch owners, upgrading also felt simple, so many of them moved to the Switch 2 without hesitation.

Can the Nintendo Switch Challenge the PS2 Record?

Even though the Nintendo Switch is Nintendo’s most successful console ever, it still hasn’t sold more units than the PlayStation 2. Sony says the PS2 sold around 160 million units, and the Switch is only a few million sales away from that number.

Sales of the Switch have slowed down because Nintendo is now focusing on the Switch 2. In the nine months after the Switch 2’s release, the original version only sold 3.25 million units. Still, this means that many people are still buying the console, most likely for its cheaper price. If Nintendo continues selling the original Switch for a few more years, it could eventually match or even pass the PS2. It won’t be easy, but it’s still possible.

Conclusion

Nintendo remains one of the most successful gaming companies in the industry. With both versions of the Nintendo Switch reaching milestones like this, it seems that they’re heading in a good direction. The Switch 2 selling faster than the original Switch seems to set Nintendo up for even more success in the future.
