The Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3 for short, is one of the largest trade fairs for video games and the gaming industry in general, which is set to take place in Los Angeles in June 2023. However, it has become known that some well-known companies will not take part in the event this year.

It has been announced in several reports that both Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft will not be present at E3 this year. That shocked a lot of fans, after all these companies were a big part of the fair.

Fewer and fewer exhibitors at E3

E3 has been running out of exhibitors for a while now. Nintendo stopped holding big E3 press conferences a decade ago, and Microsoft and Bethesda recently started holding their own showcases alongside the E3 festivities. Sony has also not been present at E3 for a few years.

While Microsoft won’t be attending official E3 events, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer says the company will be hosting its own events to coincide with E3 this year, as it has in previous years, so that all press and industry representatives who are interested who are in town during E3 will also be at the Xbox trade show. It’s unknown what Nintendo and Sony will be hosting instead of E3, if anything, but Geoff Keighley’s Summer Games Fest will be happening around the same time.

E3 has changed quite a bit over time and now has a fresher concept. The events specialist ReedPop took over the planning of the fair last year, saying:

“For years, we’ve listened, heard, and studied the global gaming community’s feedback. E3 2023 will be recognizably epic—a return to form that honors what’s always worked—while reshaping what didn’t and setting a new benchmark for video game expos in 2023 and beyond.”

Is the E3 still worth it?

While it’s questionable how epic the event will be without all the big exhibitors, ReedPop commented:

“As we spent much of 2022 refining how E3 2023 would take shape, reflecting on the feedback we solicited, we did not send a single contract to an exhibitor until the start of this month. We have received a tremendous amount of interest and verbal commitments from many of the biggest companies in the industry, and when we are ready to announce the exhibitors we are confident it will be a lineup that will make the trip to Los Angeles well worth it for the industry and consumers alike.”

E3 will take place from June 13-16 and will feature over 200 exhibitors.
