Riot has just unveiled a brand-new Legends of Runeterra keyword called Augment! The name itself is pretty self-explanatory, but there’s more to it than meets the eye! Whenever you play a created card, a summoned unit with Augment will gain +1 | 0. Now the “created card” bit is what’s most important (and peculiar) here.

What it basically means is that any card that is not initially a part of your deck will empower units with the Augment keyword. So think of Heimerdinger’s Fleeting Turrets, Ezreal’s “Mystic Shot,” or any other similar mechanic. If it’s a unit or a spell that is not literally a part of your deck — and you happen to play it — your Augment units will be empowered. Quite nifty, you’ll probably agree.

Now, before we delve any deeper, it’s important to note that this keyword is foreshadowing Viktor’s release. Augmenting units is obviously at the core of his identity, so expect many such cards to be revealed over the coming days and weeks!

And, as always, what would an expansion announcement be without a hype-inducing teaser?

An Augmented Piltover

Other than the Augment keyword, we also have a brand-new Legends of Runeterra card called “Mechanized Mimic.” It’s a 5 mana 3 | 4 unit from Piltover (as expected) with the Augment keyword and a very powerful effect. Heck, maybe that’s even an understatement. When “Mechanized Mimic” attacks, it gains all keywords that are present on your allies. So basically if you have an Elusive unit and a unit with Overwhelm, “Mechanized Mimic” will gain both keywords upon attacking.

Even though there are still many cards left to be revealed, it’s already safe to call this one “potentially OP.” Piltover & Zaun isn’t exactly the most competitive region meta-wise, but it’s far from underpowered. We’ve mostly seen it combined with Noxus in certain discard aggro and Ezreal-based decks. Sure, there’s the occasional Heimer deck thrown in for good measure, but it’s not as prevalent. With Viktor’s release being right around the corner, however, that’s bound to change.

In any case, it’s exciting to see such a fascinating new keyword; one that will no doubt introduce numerous new ways of playing the game. We’re always up for a bit of diversification!

New Champions on the Horizon

Other than Viktor, we already know that Riven and Zoe will also be hitting live servers in a matter of weeks. How they’ll be incorporated into the broader LoR world still remains to be seen, though. Either way, fun days are ahead, that’s for sure! This last set of cards will mark the third (and final) part of the Call of the Mountain expansion. We’re talking around 40 new cards that will undoubtedly affect the game in exciting new ways!

As always, stay tuned for more coverage!
