After almost 20 years of leading the way in esports, the legendary in-game leader has hung up his mouse for professional play. We may no longer see him in the match-up screens, but this isn’t goodbye forever.
From Counter-Strike to Valorant
Beginning his career in 2005 with Counter-Strike, ANGE1 played CS:GO for almost 15 years, competing at the top level. Specifically, he attended 51 LAN events, nine of which being a Major, and established himself as an effective in-game leader.
Along with mechanical ability and tactical acumen, ANGE1’s leadership contributed to every lineup he championed over the years. Unfortunately for ANGE1, he never obtained the prestigious S-Tier title in his time as a player in CS:GO.
ANGE1’s Rise in Valorant
When Valorant launched in 2020, ANGE1 was one of the first professional players to jump into the shooter without hesitation. As soon as the game went live, he fit in nicely with FunPlus Phoenix and demonstrated his skill set in a different gaming experience from CS.
His greatest moment came in 2022 when he led FPX through an amazing run in the lower bracket. As a result, they won the Valorant Masters Copenhagen, the first and last S-Tier international title for him in Valorant.
Challenges and Final Years as a Player
Even for a seasoned player like ANGE1, who knew Valorant inside and out, he openly acknowledged that competing at the highest levels robbed him of focus and energy. He had put maximum effort into the last two years of competing and wasn’t able to quite meet those expectations.
NAVI’s team results were also indicative of this struggle. After some early promise, they were often not even close to finishing on the podium in the VCT EMEA or qualifying for major international events like the Valorant Champions in Paris 2025.
ANGE1 even noted their best step forward was a 4th place finish at the Stage 2 playoffs in 2025. However, it was something that was still not good enough for the high demands of this competition.
ANGE1’s Transition and New Role
ANGE1, after an incredible 20-year esports career, has officially retired from professional play in Valorant to become a coach. While the last couple of years hadn’t been easy in terms of growing as a player, he’s still passionate about the game and believes in his ability to outthink the game.
Now that he’s taking on a new role as a coach, ANGE1 is keen to start his venture into coaching with a new experience for the Valorant Champions Tour (VCT) 2026 season. With his time as flexible IGL, having played the roles of initiator and smoker, he is in a good place to make the transition.
Final Thoughts
Without ANGE1, the competitive world of Valorant loses one truly great tactician but also gains an invaluable mentor. There is something bittersweet in his retirement. But if there is one thing that is constant in esports, it’s that the game and players revolve around change. What we do know is that fans can find solace that ANGE1’s passion and brilliance will still help NAVI’s future. And maybe even that of the next generation of champions.
