Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has entered its fully open beta phase, giving all players access from August 28 through September 1 without requiring a preorder or beta code.

The second testing weekend expands substantially on Early Access. Alongside traditional 6v6 Multiplayer, players can try Ground War: Combat Outpost, Gunfight-based Kill Block, a Campaign mission and Call of Duty: Warzone Resurgence on the new Zodiac map. Nintendo Switch 2 players can also participate for the first time.

Modern Warfare 4 Open Beta is free for everyone

The Open Beta began on August 28 at 10:00 AM PT, corresponding to 7:00 PM CEST, and runs until September 1 at the same time.

Players can access the test on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Steam, Battle.net and Nintendo Switch 2. Unlike the Early Access period held from August 21 to August 25, Weekend Two requires no preorder or access code.

Players simply need to download the separate Modern Warfare 4 Beta client through their platform’s digital storefront.

  • Open Beta: August 28 to September 1
  • Start and end time: 10:00 AM PT / 7:00 PM CEST
  • No preorder or beta code required
  • Available on PS5, Xbox Series, PC and Nintendo Switch 2

An Activision account is recommended because progression and eligible beta rewards are tied to the player’s Activision ID and can carry across supported platforms.

Campaign appears in a Call of Duty beta

One of the biggest differences compared with previous Call of Duty tests is the inclusion of Campaign gameplay.

Weekend Two includes the mission “Entrenched,” giving players an early look at Modern Warfare 4’s single-player experience before the full launch.

Activision describes this as the first time a Campaign mission has been playable during a Call of Duty beta.

The addition means the Modern Warfare 4 test goes significantly beyond the traditional multiplayer-only beta format.

Players can also use the Mobility Course to familiarize themselves with Modern Warfare 4’s expanded movement mechanics before entering competitive matches.

Six core multiplayer maps feature in the beta

Modern Warfare 4’s beta provides a relatively broad multiplayer pool.

The core 6v6 selection includes Cachette, Lithium, Lotus, Rooftops, Silkworm and Transit 213. Players can test these maps across familiar modes including Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed and Search and Destroy.

Modern Warfare 4 also introduces modes such as Hijack and Inflation during the test.

Larger-scale combat is represented through Ground War: Combat Outpost, with Imjin Farmlands and Wolves Stadium available as battlefields.

  • Cachette, Lithium, Lotus, Rooftops, Silkworm and Transit 213 feature in 6v6
  • Ground War includes Imjin Farmlands and Wolves Stadium
  • Search and Destroy, Hardpoint and Domination return
  • Kill Block offers a different Gunfight-style experience

Players can additionally explore Create a Class, Operators, Gunsmith, Apex Attachments, equipment, Field Upgrades, perks and killstreaks during the beta.

Warzone joins Weekend Two on Zodiac

Weekend Two also brings Warzone into the Modern Warfare 4 beta.

Players can drop into the new Zodiac map in Resurgence, giving Activision an opportunity to test how Modern Warfare 4’s weapons and movement systems interact with Warzone before the full release.

The addition significantly expands the scale of the beta compared with its first weekend.

Activision is using the test to gather data and player feedback across several areas, including movement, spawning and weapon balance.

Infinity Ward already changed weapon balance

The Early Access weekend produced multiple updates before the Open Beta even started.

Infinity Ward adjusted several weapons after players criticized the time-to-kill, including changes to damage multipliers designed to increase minimum TTK in certain engagements.

Spawn logic was also adjusted across several modes, with dedicated Hardpoint spawn tuning planned for Weekend Two.

The studio has said further updates may arrive throughout the Open Beta as player data continues to accumulate.

That makes the current version meaningfully different from the build available when Early Access first opened on August 21.

Beta rewards carry into the full game

Progression continues throughout Weekend Two, with the maximum player level increased to 30.

Players can earn cosmetic and gameplay-related beta rewards while progressing. Eligible rewards are immediately usable during the beta and will become available again when Modern Warfare 4 officially launches.

The full game is scheduled for October 23, making this beta one of Infinity Ward’s largest opportunities to test the game with a broad audience before release.

Assessment

Modern Warfare 4’s Open Beta is unusually extensive for a pre-release Call of Duty test.

Combining traditional multiplayer with Ground War, Campaign content and Warzone gives Infinity Ward significantly more data than a conventional 6v6 weekend would provide. The decision to make Weekend Two completely open should also dramatically increase the number of players testing the game.

The most important factor will be how quickly Infinity Ward reacts to feedback. Weapon balance and spawn behavior have already changed during the beta period, showing that the developer is actively adjusting the game rather than simply treating the test as a marketing demo.

With the full launch scheduled for October 23, the August 28 to September 1 Open Beta provides players with an early indication of Modern Warfare 4’s direction — while giving Infinity Ward several weeks to respond before release.
