Modern Warfare 4 beta update makes movement faster and boosts Warzone XP

Infinity Ward has released another major update for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Open Beta, making movement faster across Warzone Resurgence while significantly increasing XP gains and adjusting several gameplay systems.

The August 29 update focuses heavily on player feedback from the first days of the fully open beta. Sprint speeds, ADS strafing and melee movement have all been increased, while the developer has also replaced the starting pistol on Zodiac and changed several killstreak warning zones.

The patch follows the much broader Weekend Two update, which already changed every weapon in the beta and experimented with removing Tactical Sprint from the default movement system.

Movement becomes faster on Zodiac

Infinity Ward has responded directly to complaints that movement in the new Warzone Resurgence experience felt too restrictive.

Weapon sprint speeds have now increased by between 3% and 5%, depending on weapon class. Dedicated melee sprint speed is 3.5% faster, while ADS strafe movement receives an even larger boost of between 6% and 10%.

  • Weapon sprint speed increased by 3-5%
  • Melee sprint speed increased by 3.5%
  • ADS strafe speed increased by 6-10%
  • Changes are intended to make Zodiac feel more fluid

Infinity Ward says the objective is to improve how quickly players can navigate fights without abandoning the more deliberate combat pacing established for Modern Warfare 4.

The update shows that movement remains one of Infinity Ward’s biggest areas of experimentation during the beta.

This is particularly notable because Weekend Two already introduced major movement changes to standard Multiplayer.

Tactical Sprint remains a major experiment

Before the August 29 update, Infinity Ward made one of the most controversial changes of the beta by removing Tactical Sprint from the default movement system.

Instead, Tactical Sprint was moved to the Blood Rush Perk.

Players who equip the perk still gain access to the mechanic, but its movement speed has been reduced by 4%. Its sprint-to-fire penalty was also changed to match normal sprinting.

At the same time, standard pistol and knife sprint speeds were increased.

Sliding received reductions in both distance and speed, while the delay between sliding and jumping became longer. Overall stamina was also reduced by 8%.

Movement change Adjustment
Warzone weapon sprint speed +3-5%
ADS strafe speed +6-10%
Melee sprint speed +3.5%
Tactical Sprint speed -4%
Slide distance -10%
Slide speed -9%

Infinity Ward describes the Tactical Sprint change as an experiment rather than a confirmed launch feature. The studio will evaluate player feedback before deciding whether the system remains this way for the full game.

Resurgence receives major XP increases

Players spending time on the new Zodiac Resurgence map should now progress considerably faster.

Standard Resurgence Quads received a 55% increase to Player XP and a 13% boost to Weapon XP.

Casual Resurgence Quads received even larger adjustments. Player XP has increased by 46%, while Weapon XP gains have been boosted by 240%.

  • Resurgence Quads Player XP increased by 55%
  • Weapon XP in Resurgence Quads increased by 13%
  • Casual Resurgence Player XP increased by 46%
  • Casual Resurgence Weapon XP increased by 240%

These increases should make Warzone a much more efficient option for players attempting to reach the beta level cap or unlock equipment before the test concludes.

Zodiac gets a new starting pistol

Infinity Ward has also changed how players begin matches on Zodiac.

The Sang 9mm is now used as both the infiltration and backup pistol. The developer said feedback indicated that the previous sidearm was hurting the opening combat experience.

The gas explosion that occurred during infiltration has also been disabled.

Players can now revive downed teammates while prone, providing more flexibility when attempting revives behind limited cover.

Custom Loadouts remain unavailable during the beta, although Infinity Ward has confirmed that they will return in the full Warzone experience at launch.

Because players must currently rely on predefined loadouts, several of those setups have also been modified with different optics, attachments and secondary weapons.

Killstreak warnings become less intrusive

Several killstreak warning zones have been substantially reduced.

The Bombing Run warning radius has been cut from 120 meters to 60 meters. Impact Warhead warnings have dropped from 76 meters to 25 meters, while Artillery Beacon warnings have been reduced from 120 meters to 40 meters.

Infinity Ward says the previous visual warnings extended far beyond the actual affected areas.

The studio had already increased the base cost of every killstreak by one kill for Weekend Two after players complained about excessive killstreak spam during Early Access.

Every beta weapon was changed for Weekend Two

The August 29 patch builds on an unusually aggressive weapon-balancing pass released when the Open Beta began.

Infinity Ward adjusted every weapon available in the test after determining that time-to-kill remained faster than intended.

Instead of increasing player health globally, the developer modified individual weapon performance to slightly increase survivability while maintaining useful damage at longer ranges.

Aim Assist has also been reduced across both Multiplayer and Warzone.

Infinity Ward has already acknowledged that the current Aim Assist values are not necessarily the final target, meaning further changes are possible before release.

Audio and accessibility also receive attention

Warzone footstep audio has been adjusted to more closely match the live version of the game, including restoring the previous maximum audible distance.

Players can also reduce first-person camera movement to as low as 25% through the Camera settings.

A separate option allows HUD shaking to be disabled entirely.

Infinity Ward says both features are intended to improve visual clarity for players who find excessive camera or interface movement distracting.

Assessment

Modern Warfare 4’s beta is increasingly functioning like a live balancing environment rather than a fixed pre-release demo.

Infinity Ward has already adjusted movement, time-to-kill, Aim Assist, spawns, killstreaks, weapons, audio and progression within days of the first public tests.

The movement changes are especially interesting. Removing default Tactical Sprint initially pushed MW4 toward a slower and more traditional Call of Duty feel, while the latest Warzone patch moves sprint and ADS speeds slightly back in the opposite direction.

That tension will likely remain one of the biggest balancing challenges before launch.

With the Open Beta still providing Infinity Ward with large amounts of player data, additional updates would not be surprising. The current build may therefore offer a good indication of Modern Warfare 4’s direction, but many of its most important gameplay systems are clearly still being actively tuned.
