Malaysia’s biggest mobile MOBA league has made its own new record as the 13th season of MPL Malaysia sets new viewership records.
Data from Esports Charts show that this season of the tournament is the most popular and most-watched ever for the esport in Malaysia, with its grand final featuring the undefeated Red Giants Esports winning against the HomeBois, 4-2.
Red Giants Esports showcased a dominant performance in the tournament, remaining undefeated in the group stage. They secured victories over King Empire and RSG Malaysia to advance to the final, where they faced HomeBois, the reigning champions from the previous season.
Despite not maintaining a flawless map record in the finals, RGE’s overall performance was impressive. They concluded the tournament with a remarkable 28 wins and 3 losses, marking a significant achievement for a team that had never before placed higher than third in the MPL Malaysia league. Red Giants Esports will also represent Malaysia in the biggest esports event ever for MLBB, the 2024 Mid-Season Cup which will be held in the Esports World Cup in Saudi Arabia.
This particular match now holds the distinction of being the most-watched match in MPL Malaysia history, clocking in at over 631,000 peak viewers.
The global esports statistics provider also noted that MPL Malaysia Season 13 broadcasts generated over 10.5 million hours of watch time, a 13% increase from the previous season. Additionally, Esports Charts said the average concurrent viewership grew by 23.3%, while the peak number of concurrent viewers rose by 14.4%.
“The grand final between Red Giants Esports and HomeBois was the most popular match of the tournament. Notably, HomeBois was the clear favorite among viewers, with five of their matches ranking among the top five most-watched games of the season. HomeBois also became the undisputed leader in total Hours Watched,” Esports Charts noted in its report.
The viewership statistics for MPL Malaysia Season 13 saw a notable increase, driven by several key factors. The number of channels covering the season surged from approximately 80 in Season 12 to 140 in Season 13. This expansion included more Indonesian broadcasts and a rise in TikTok streams, with TikTok nearly equaling YouTube in total hours watched.
Additionally, official channels from other MPL leagues, including MPL Philippines and MPL Cambodia, provided coverage of MPL Malaysia matches. In contrast, the previous season relied primarily on community casters for audience reach in other languages.
This practice was also done in MPL Philippines, as the league had also introduced its first-ever Bahasa Indonesia stream in a bid to entice more viewership for the league from high-viewership markets like Indonesia and the Philippines.
Meanwhile, the viewership statistics for MPL Malaysia Season 13 have revealed the most popular teams, with HomeBois leading the pack. According to Esports Charts, HomeBois garnered an average of 157,059 viewers, making them the top team in terms of viewership. Red Giants Esports followed with 115,920 average viewers, while King Empire secured the third spot with 88,668 average viewers.
RSG MY and TODAK rounded out the top five, attracting 83,823 and 63,120 average viewers respectively. The data covers the period from March 29 to June 2, 2024, highlighting the significant interest and engagement in the MPL Malaysia Season 13.
These viewership stats are seen to give a major boost to the Malaysian audience, especially as the nation is expected to once again host the M-Series World Championships at the latter part of 2024.
