Microsoft is offering its users the upgrade to Windows 11, the latest version of its operating system. At the moment, this version coexists with Windows 10.

However, Microsoft will stop selling Windows 10 licenses, according to a notice on the official portal, which also reminds users that the official support for Windows 10 is until October 14, 2025. So if you purchase Windows 10 licenses through Microsoft, you should act quickly. However, it seems that downloading the system from the official website will still be feasible.

Goodbye to Windows 10 licenses

Microsoft will stop selling Windows 10 licenses on January 31, 2023, which is only a few days away. This applies to both the Home and Pro editions. The apparent cause is the commercialization of Windows 11, the operating system version on which Microsoft has focused all its development efforts. However, it is failing to achieve a significant market share for several reasons

Although the upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is one of the most popular ways to access the new version, there are still some years of support for Windows 10. In any case, Microsoft will soon stop selling Windows 10 licenses. The warning is already prominently displayed on the official pages of Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro.

Microsoft reports:

“January 31, 2023, will be the last day this Windows 10 download is sold. Windows 10 will continue to be supported until October 14, 2025, with security updates that help protect your PC against viruses, spyware, and other malware.”

However, the fact that Microsoft will stop selling Windows 10 licenses; does not mean that it plans to eliminate the means of downloading the system installation images, at least for the time being. This is how the company indicates it in the documentation, whose update is maintained until 2025.

Microsoft’s objective

As mentioned, Microsoft’s main objective is to push Windows 11. Unfortunately, the sales share of Windows 11 is meager for expectations. According to Statcounter’s analysis, the operating system closes 2022 with just a 15% market share, while Windows 10 remains in an unreachable area for now, with a share of 71.29%. Windows 7, a version without official support, had almost 10%.

The results are apparent. Windows users are not in love with Windows 11; few have changed from previous versions. The chaotic management of its minimum hardware requirements is behind it. But not only is this the cause, but due to the lack of updates, a significant part of Windows 10 users recommend not switching to the new version. Moreover, the most intriguing new features promised at its launch have been slow to arrive or are still under development.
