A few weeks ago when Riot announced the changes that patch 11.24 would bring, they received a lot of backlash from the community. They said that patch 11.24 would be the last one for 2021 and that the next patch would be patch 12.01 coming in early January. Some of the analysts in the pro scene condemned Riot for this approach, for not using the biggest period of inactivity for implementing changes.

On another note, the development team also stated that the first patch of the next year will bring a lot more changes than a usual patch, because on it they intend to fix a lot of the things that have been over performing since the preseason started. But following this, they realized their mistake and decided to drop a micro patch which we will highlight today. These changes are already implemented on the live server, and if you missed our breakdown of patch 11.24 you can check it out here.

Are AP Kaisa and AP Varus viable ?

Gwen’s early game power was toned down earlier in the season after she started dominating pro play and high elo consitently. After those nerfs she has held one of the worst win rates across all levels of play so they are making her tankier, with her base health going from 550 to 590. Olaf’s passive attack speed bonus is also getting buffed, going from 75% to 100% based on his missing health.

Kaisa’s autos now do more damage scaling with ability power, her Q ability now scales with 50% of her bonus AD instead of the previous 40%, and her evolved W now refunds 77% of the cool down if it hits, up from the previous 70%.

Riot are also looking to bring back the on-hit playstyle for Varus, considering his current state. For almost three years, the only time Varus has been viable was with the lethality poke build, which was super oppressive in high elo and pro play. These buffs to his passive make him scale better into a late game hyper-carry, while the W ability AP scaling buffs make the AP Varus build more viable, at least in ARAM and other modes. Pyke now also heals more from his passive and his Q gets a bit more damage. This probably isn’t enough to improve his waveclear and bring back solo lane Pyke, but should help him overall.

Kassadin and Vayne nerfs

On the other side Mundo has been stat checking everyone in the top lane with his passive and high base damage ever since his rework. The recent change to Frostfire Gauntlet and it not having the burn passive like the other tank items, combined with the Q damage nerfs, means that Mundo players now will have to choose between damage and wave clear or utility and chase potential. The resurgence of mages in the preseason, combined with the new and improved mana items, only signaled the rise of Kassadin.

That’s why Riot are nerfing his passive magic damage reduction as well as reducing his W damage at all stages. Lux’s Q ability now has a fixed cooldown of 11 seconds and does less damage, but the previous buffs to her W shield scaling might mean a W second max even for solo lane Lux.

Vayne on the other hand has been having a great time ever since Shieldbow and Wit’s End became the meta, and the recent changes to Lethal Tempo have pushed her over the top. With this nerf she now gets 10 less attack damage when she uses her Ultimate. Talon’s W ability now does 130% damage to jungle monsters instead of the previous 150%, which could hurt his clear speed considering he maxes that ability first, when playing jungle.

In the system changes section, Glacial Augment now scales better with healing and shielding powers making it more viable for supports. While the bonus true damage that First Strike gave is down to 9% from the previous 10%.
