Zilean, the Chronokeeper, is one of the three brand-new champions coming to Legends of Runeterra on May 5th! The spoiler season is currently in full swing, and we finally have a full-fledged champion announcement to break down! This time around, it’s the gray-haired Icathian mage best known for his ability to wield ancient temporal magic.

Some also like to call him “Father Time” which, given his appearance and presentation, is certainly appropriate.

His overall M.O. is pretty much akin to his abilities in regular old League which, in all fairness, is a good thing. A lot of speeding things up, predicting, and even an ultimate that provides a bona fide revive (and a subsequent stat boost).

All in all, there’s a lot to like. But before we delve any deeper, make sure to watch the following video — it’s our first (and thus far only) look at Zilean and his highly peculiar playstyle!

Legends of Runeterra | Zilean Breakdown

Zilean” is a 2 mana Shurima champion with 1 | 4. Once played, he’ll create four Time Bombs in your deck and then allow you to Predict. To level him up, he’ll have to see you destroy two allied Time Bombs.

Once leveled up, he’ll grow to 2 | 4 and gain a new Round Start effect. At the start of each round, you’ll get a Fleeting copy of each non-Fleeting card you’ve played the round before. His previous Play effect will remain as well. An interesting kit, all things considered. It doesn’t really scream “OP!” but we’ll have to reserve judgement until we see him in action. If anything, Zilea ‘s inherent ability to clear the board (bit by bit) should definitely comes in handy against popular meta decks like Shadow Isles!

Time Bomb” is a 2 mana Shuriman landmark. Once summoned, you’ll draw 1 card and advance other allied Time Bombs for 1 round. It also comes with a Countdown of 1 that will deal 1 damage to all enemies and the enemy Nexus once it reaches zero.

Soothsayer” is a 2 mana 1 | 4 unit that, once summoned, will grant all allied champions and landmarks SpellShield. This is where things get a whole lot more interesting. Getting this sort of effect (potentially game-changing) for just two mana — on a unit with 4 HP points, no less — is just insane. Heck, we’re putting it mildly here!

Scrying Sands” is a 1 mana Burst spell from Shurima that’ll allow you to Predict and then debuff an enemy unit -2 | 0 for the rest of the round.

Zilean’s Chronoshift” is a 7 mana Burst spell from Shurima. It’ll give an allied champion invulnerability in a very specific way: the next time said champion is supposed to die, it’ll be fully healed and will gain +3 | +3 instead. This spell will also create another Zilean in your deck. Overall, an insanely powerful spell, although its potent effect comes at quite a high cost.

Closing Remarks

All in all, no one’s all too sure how to feel about Zilean and whether or not he’ll be viable whatsoever. He’s more of a “B tier” champion in the sense that he’s a supplementary addition, rather than anything else. So it’ll all boil down to whom players end up pairing him with. Still, it feels like there’s ample potential, albeit most of it lies dormant. We’ll have to wait and see, but there’s definitely a reason for optimism.

We’ll be back with another breakdown before you know it so stay tuned!
