As if a brand-new expansion wasn’t enough, Riot has just announced the first-ever Legends of Runeterra Masters Europe! Needless to say, this is quite an exciting moment for this fledgling (and quite popular) digital card game!

Millions of players have come aboard and are enjoying Riot’s palatable (albeit still sufficiently complex) take on the CCG genre. There are two additional Call of the Mountain expansions in the pipeline and we’ll finally get to see Europe’s best compete for a shot at glory!

The Set-Up

Before the tournament begins, Riot will keep close watch of the ranked ladder. Whether or not a nation is eligible to compete depends on how well its players perform up until October 12th. The Top 16 players from different countries will propel their nations to the Group Stage — starting on November 7th. These players will then compete up until November 22nd. After that, the top two teams from each group will advance to the Knockout Stage. The Grand Finals are scheduled for the end of November!

Also, you don’t necessarily have to be a Master ranked player to make it in, but you do have to be a Top 3 player (rank-wise) in your country. Each match will be played in the 3v3 format, with each competitor facing their equivalent seed. After a match is won, that team will no longer be able to use their winning deck/strategy for the rest of the series.

This means that adaptation and mid-series pivoting will be of the utmost importance! Teams will also be able to ban three champions from their opponents, further complicating things.

Riot still has many surprises in store, and it’s fair to expect a similar tournament for North America (and perhaps other regions) as well! The community around Legends of Runeterra is quite passionate, and now we’ll get to see which European country will shine the brightest! This will also be a highly engaging showcase of the current meta and today’s most potent decks! And, well, a lot of Aurelion Sol and Leona, if the ranked ladder is any indication.

The full ruleset will be released on the official Legends of Runeterra Masters Europe website, although it’s currently down for some reason. Still, check back in a couple of days for any updates!

Closing Remarks

The fact that Riot is organizing such a tournament (in the midst of a pandemic) is quite fantastic. It’s an organic way to give back to your community, and it also helps in building and empowering it. Europe’s finest will have something to fight for, and the rest of us will spectate and enjoy the top-tier gameplay!
