League of Legends Worlds 2024 UPDATE: T1 3-1 GEN.G Reaching the Grand Finals

fragster Stalingrad Dollosa 28. October 2024

The League of Legends (LoL) World Championships (Worlds) 2024 delivered yet another spectacular match with the T1 vs Gen.G Semifinals at the Adidas Arena in Paris. On October 27, T1 asserted that the Worlds stage truly is their homeground with an astounding 3-1 victory against Gen.G, their long-time LCK rivals.

Previously on a 10-game losing streak in all of their matches versus Gen.G so far, T1 finally broke the curse, overcoming their Achilles’ heel and biggest hurdle yet in the competition. Now, the team advances to face Bilibili Gaming (BLG) on November 2 to defend their Worlds title, promising another grand showdown for the LPL-LCK rivalry.

The End of Gen.G’s Dominance

Gen.G’s seemingly undefeatable run had crushed T1 over and over again this year, dominating domestically with a four-peat in the LCK splits. In addition, Gen.G also secured their Worlds qualification with their victory in Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) 2024, in which T1 placed third. Meanwhile, entering the tournament as underdogs after barely winning a grueling Regional Finals against KT Rolster, T1 paled in comparison to the tournament favorites.

Yet, T1 picked the perfect place to flip the script, proving that their now-famed “Worlds buff” can overwrite their “Gen.G curse”. Counting T1 out has never been a choice, and the team seems adamant to prove that no one can boot them out of the World Championship stage as well, even if it is the team that has, since 2022, been their kryptonite.

T1 vs Gen.G LoL Worlds 2024 Series Breakdown

In the four-game series, T1 shone the brightest when playing to their strengths instead of trying to throw Gen.G off with a dizzying lane swap strategy. Here’s the game-by-game breakdown of the epic series.

Game 1: T1’s Strategic Mastery

The opener game for the T1 vs. Gen.G LoL Worlds 2024 Semifinals set the tone for what was to come. It was slow and felt deliberate, with Gen.G’s early diving attempts countered by T1’s map awareness and objective control. Similar to their Quarterfinals match against Top Esports, T1 showed little interest in entering difficult teamfights and were quick to disengage, later punishing Gen.G’s overaggressive plays.

T1’s support Ryu “Keria” Minseok happily disrupted Gen.G’s engages while their star midlaner Lee “Faker” Sanghyeok maintained control over the midlane. T1 closed out at 26 minutes with an 11-6 kill advantage, with AD carry Lee “Gumayusi” Minhyung racking up a triple kill in the game-changing teamfight.

Game 2: Gen.G’s Fierce Retaliation

The reigning MSI champions weren’t going down without a fight. Capitalizing on the awkward lane swap strategy of T1, Gen.G struck back with their signature early-game dominance. It was almost too easy for Kim “Canyon” Geonbu’s jungle presence to suffocate T1’s map movement, turning their own dizzying tactics against themselves. Soon, Gen.G were securing every objective while T1, looking lost, were denied any opportunity for a comeback.

The revenge was vicious especially for Gumayusi, whose deathless streak in Worlds Knockouts ended at 8 games after getting killed by Kim “Peyz” Suhwan. Throughout the entire game, the team was bringing T1 back to the LCK, reminding them how they were able to take win after win in their head-to-head record. The 12-1 kill score after only 27 minutes showed Gen.G at their ruthless best.

Game 3: T1’s Answer

Game 3 of the T1 vs. Gen.G LoL Worlds 2024 Semifinals saw T1 in their best form throughout the series. With a draft that plays straight into their strengths and the return of Faker’s Akali, T1 were able to recapture their superiority in teamfights and objective control. Despite toplaner Choi “Zeus” Wooje falling into an early gank, T1 was able to bounce back swiftly.

The botlane duo of Gumayusi-Keria dominated their lane, creating space for Mun “Oner” Hyeonjun, their jungler, to secure crucial objectives. Truly capitalizing on their prowess, T1 asserted overwhelming dominance in teamfights. The one that sealed the deal happened near the Baron pit, resulting in 3 deaths for Gen.G and T1’s inevitable march into their base. T1 took the series to match point with a 20-3 kill lead in 31 minutes.

Game 4: T1 Securing Victory

The series finale displayed T1’s Worlds experience and championship-caliber adaptability.  Keria on his second Pyke pick this whole tournament effectively disrupted Canyon’s jungle tempo in the early game and set the pace. Meanwhile, Zeus made up for his earlier setback with dominant sidelane pressure on Jax. By 10 minutes, T1 had already secured a 3k gold lead, but showed no plans of giving Gen.G room to breathe in the early game.

One ambush on Faker’s Ahri resulted in two losses for Gen.G, and the Baron again went to T1. The fight was not over at that point, however, as Gen.G secured a Baron for themselves later on after finding a fight near the Drake. With the gold lead and kill score both equalized, T1 had to find an avenue to turn the fight in their favor again. This came at around 32 minutes in the midlane, where Gen.G’s attack on Faker turned into a devastating loss for them as the remaining T1 members took all but Canyon in the resulting teamfight. T1 then seized Gen.G’s base and closed the series with a 15-9 kill lead.

T1’s journey continues in London, where they’ll face BLG in the November 2 Grand Finals. Meanwhile, Gen.G bows out of the tournament with a third place finish, going home with $178,000 as consolation.

  • The GOAT and first Hall of Legends inductee, Faker, reaches his 7th finals at Worlds.
  • T1 has the chance to extend their record of having the most Worlds trophies with a fifth championship title.
  • T1 can double their achievement of back-to-back wins, the first being in 2015 and 2016.
  • Gumayusi ends his streak of consecutive deathless Worlds Knockout games at 8, still the longest held by any player.

Hailed as the greatest team of all time, T1 faced doubts and countless setbacks on their way to their Worlds 2024 qualification, even after winning the same tournament in the previous year. Gen.G was one team that actively confronted their status domestically, putting T1 in their shadow all year long. Yet, in the T1 vs. Gen.G LoL Worlds 2024 match in the Paris Knockouts, T1 finally claimed their long-awaited redemption when stakes are the highest.

There goes the Church of Chovy, as the Unkillable Demon King makes his way back into another Worlds finale. Gen.G is still undisputed as one of the most promising teams in the present-day, but they will have to wait for their time to shine on League’s grandest stage. For now, all eyes turn to the O2 Arena in London with the BLG-T1 standoff on the horizon.
