fragster Stalingrad 2. November 2024

Fingers were crossed, breaths were held. The League of Legends World Championship 2024 has come to a grand conclusion after an epic best-of-five Final between T1 and Bilibili Gaming (BLG).

In the grueling clash of dynasties, it was T1 who ultimately emerged victorious, defeating BLG 3-2. The League of Legends Worlds 2024 now saw T1 as back-to-back champions, claiming their fifth Worlds title and cementing their legacy.

Make Them Believe: T1’s Majestic Worlds Run

The Worlds 2024 slogan, “Make Them Believe”, would have suited either of BLG or T1’s championship narratives. For T1, it was about overcoming their regular season hurdles and defending their Worlds title. For BLG, it was about reclaiming the LPL’s glory and winning their first Summoner’s Cup.

Yet, only one story prevailed in the end. On November 2, 2024, the esports world witnessed the battle of LCK vs LPL titans, both laden with something to prove. London’s O2 Arena erupted with cheers for the eventual champions, T1, who demonstrated what happens to teams questioning their Worlds dominance.

Entering the grand tournament as underdogs, they were not seen as serious contenders for the title compared to other giants in the LCK and LPL, BLG included. However, who is T1, really, if not absolute monsters on the Rift when they are at their “homeground”?

Their first loss against Top Esports (TES) seemed like mere practice compared to the next Swiss games where T1 won every match. Not only that, they exacted the perfect revenge over TES (3-0) and their LCK demons, Gen.G Esports (3-1), in the Knockouts as well. With every game, T1 had grown more and more into complete menaces for every team looking to snatch away their title.

A True Test of Faith: Game-by-Game Breakdown

The best-of-five series between T1 and BLG gave analysts, fans, and casual viewers alike the intense, close game they wanted to see from the two giants. It was truly a test of faith for both players and their supporters, nervous yet hopeful with every turning tide and every game that went to the other side. Here’s how the nail-biting series went down:

Game 1: BLG Holds the Reins

BLG’s aggressive tactics in the early game bloomed beautifully into an uncontested lead. From an early first blood at the first minute to iron-tight control over the objectives, BLG had T1 in the palm of their hands and since then have never loosened their hold. While Lee “Gumayusi” Minhyung was able to steal some grubs away for T1, they still fell behind in terms of kills and turret plates.

At just 18 minutes, BLG was already destroying T1’s tier 3 towers. Their comp, which played so well into Zhao “Elk” Jia-Hao’s Ashe, secured BLG more teamfights, especially a crucial one that happened near the Baron pit. With both Baron and Dragon buffs, BLG returned to T1’s base and sealed the game at 27 minutes with a 15-3 kill lead.

Game 2: T1 Takes Back Control

First blood for Game 2 went again for BLG, with T1 quickly responding with a lane swap strategy that slowly suffocated their opponents. Choi “Zeus” Wooje’s Ornn and Mun “Oner” Hyeonjun’s Nocturne picks became a duo that constantly plunged BLG into darkness, giving T1 the advantage in map control.

Unlike their draft for Game 1, T1’s pick-ban strategy worked out well for them, with more damage helping them secure early kills or defend from ganks. BLG fell to skirmishes and teamfights that locked onto Lee “Faker” Sanghyeok but failed and instead allowed T1 to turn the fight around. The Baron teamfight gave T1 a 14-3 kill count, and T1 were able to take Game 2 in 27 minutes with four more kills and a 15k gold lead.

Game 3: BLG Regains Momentum

With a better comp and synergy compared to Game 2, BLG was quickly able to get back on their feet. The Blitzcrank pick for Luo “ON” Wenjun and the Kindred for jungler Peng “XUN” Lixun proved to be crucial in BLG’s early game dominance. They were able to outmaneuver T1 in the jungle and gank them in all lanes.

By the mid game, T1 had only gotten one kill and was falling behind in terms of gold as well. T1 later tried to turn the tides with a TP flank that just did not work, with Ding “knight” Zhuo and Chen “Bin” Zebin’s unexpected tankiness. Instead, BLG gained a 10-1 kill lead and from there were able to take the Baron. Despite T1’s valiant efforts to defend their base, BLG was already too far ahead and brought the game to match point with another 27-minute victory.

Game 4: T1 Goes For Game 5

With only one game left for BLG to win, T1 knew they had to even the series. Game 4 saw the most balanced game yet with T1 going for aggressive plays as well to counter BLG. Faker back on Sylas especially showcased daring solo kills and engages that turned fights in their favor and helped them get ahead.

BLG, despite having what could be considered a better draft with the Smolder-Ziggs duo, failed to develop their strengths to the fullest. Their early game teamfight could have been a game-changer, but was not necessary for their scaling comp. T1 had since then played it smarter and denied BLG any chance to follow it up. T1 secured two Barons and ended the game in 31 minutes with a 14-9 kill lead, bringing the match to Silver Scrapes.

Game 5: T1 Seals BLG’s Fate

For the final and most crucial game of the series, we saw both BLG and T1 go back to comfort picks. Bin’s best champion, Jax, was the prio for BLG on blue side, while Zeus was quick to counter it with his Gragas. Game 5 also saw knight on his Ahri and Gumayusi on Xayah.

BLG get their fifth consecutive first kill for the series, but T1 recovered quickly with an early lead with another fight for the Voidgrubs. Notorious for utilizing the lead from these objectives, T1 securing all three grubs was a promising start. BLG were able to retaliate at around 10 minutes, but that was basically it for them as T1 played it slow until the 29th minute, where a teamfight that took down Gumayusi and Ryu “Keria” Minseok backfired for BLG.

The remaining T1 members quickly closed in on them.and went for an ace in exchange. They went for the baron next and were soon marching down to BLG’s base. The inhibitor turrets and the nexus could only melt down rapidly upon T1’s onslaught, and their 32 minute victory, with a 6-12 kill advantage, made T1  League of Legends Worlds 2024 champions.

From LCK’s #4 to League of Legends Worlds 2024 Champions

It was undeniable that T1 had a rough run in their regular season, with their EWC victory and 3rd place finish in MSI unable to make up for their flaws shown in LCK Summer. T1 was in fact one game away from not being able to make it into World in the first place. Yet, with a miracle 3-2 win over KT Rolster in the LCK regional Finals, T1 booked their spot as the LCK’s 4th seed.

Such is a perfect story for what Worlds 2024 is all about. Dispelling the doubts from both themselves and others, T1’s ZOFGK was able to emerge as the greatest roster of all time. Since their debut in 2022, this iteration of T1 has now achieved their 3rd consecutive Worlds finals and now 2nd championship title. While many were skeptical about their performance going to Worlds, T1 was able to prove that they are still championship caliber, with the members already dominating in their respective roles.

Faker is the Worlds 2024 MVP

Near the end of the League of Legends Worlds 2024 Grand Finals, the MVP among the champions, T1, was announced. It was none other than their star midlaner, Faker, of course. His brilliant plays and shotcalling throughout the whole tournament showed how he brings the roster together, and in Game 4 and 5 of the Final series, he proved to be T1’s game-changer. On top of his MVP award, Faker also got his 500th Worlds kill in Game 4 of the Final, adding to the huge number of achievements he already has.

Despite people claiming that he is now overhyped or past his prime, Faker has shown that he is still one of the best midlaners, especially at Worlds. The level of play we had seen from him in this tournament is insane, and even when the kills are not coming from him, how he sets up fights for his teammates to get leads is outstanding.

A Legacy Kept, A Dynasty Rebuilt

With the T1 organization’s 5th, and this roster in particular’s 2nd Worlds victory, they are once again able to keep their legacy. ZOFGK, who have stood together for three years now may have this World Championship as the ground for their last run, but will be remembered as the greatest roster LoL esports have ever had. Their team had basically rebuilt the T1 dynasty in just three years, with amazing feats and multiple trophies to their name.

Against all odds, T1 showed out in this Grand Final match against BLG and redeemed themselves from their regular season mistakes. The hardships and intense preparation they went through have truly paid off, as T1 now stand as the League of Legends Worlds 2024 champions, cementing their place as legends in the Rift.
