The Church of Chovy continues to make everyone believe. After a five-game nailbiter, Gen.G triumphed vs FlyQuest 3-2 in the League of Legends Worlds 2024 Quarterfinals on Sunday, October 20. This narrow victory now leads them to an LCK civil war against T1 in the Semifinals bracket.
North America’s Finest Hour
No one has ever expected that an LCS team would be the one to push the MSI 2024 champion and LCK #2 to the brink. Yet, FlyQuest did the impossible by dragging Gen.G all the way to a Silver Scrapes at the Worlds 2024 Quarterfinals. The North American team gave us a thrilling back-and-forth series with unexpected drafts and an admirable resilience. The team’s performance definitely made their region proud and challenged the idea of a wide gap separating them from the top-performing LPL and LCK.
Gen.G vs FlyQuest Series Breakdown
- Game 1: FLY Throws The First Stone
The opening game saw David battling Goliath with 3 kills immediately going to FlyQuest, who achieved the first blood through Inspired. The team’s draft choices, including an unexpected Seraphine mid pick, seemingly set the tone for their stunning early game dominance.

FLY kept this momentum going up until the late game with objective control and solid teamfights. Soon enough, Gen.G found themselves crumbling under an unlikely opponent, losing the first game against a minor region’s first seed. This historic Game 1 victory marked the first Western win in Worlds Knockout Stage since 2020. Additionally, this is also the first time an NA team won against an LCK team at Worlds in 6 years.

- Game 2: Gen.G Strikes Back
The MSI champions knew they had to fight back with a better draft; thus enter Kassadin for Chovy and Canyon’s Nidalee. The midlaner’s mastery on the Kassadin pick proved hard to match even for Quad, his FLY counterpart who also happens to be an old teammate. Peyz’ Ashe contributed strongly to Gen.G’s successful early dive, and went on securing two triple kills later in the mid game.

With clear, meta-oriented gameplay and a successful team comp, Gen.G was able to turn the tides and dominate teamfights this time. Chovy seemed to finally be getting back into form, showing great plays along with Peyz who went relentless in going for kills. The team evened the series after 27 minutes.

- Game 3: FlyQuest Stands Up To Giants
After their success in Game 1’s unconventional draft, FLY said, “why not do it again?” and went with a surprise with tank Zeri mid for Quad. The NA team took control of the game following an early lead granted by a double kill from Massu’s Kai’Sa only three minutes in. Playing patiently and avoiding hard-to-contest fights paid off for them as they were able to outplay Gen.G who had caught up to them by minute 26.

The game peaked when Quad secured a quadra kill on tank Zeri, pushing FlyQuest to a 10,000 gold advantage and match point. The LCS underdog was intent on proving that they deserved a place in the Knockout Stage, racking up 21 kills over Gen.G’s 8 in the 42-minute match.

- Game 4: Gen.G vs FlyQuest Reaches Silver Scrapes
Gen.G regained control in Game 4 through Canyon’s signature Nidalee pick, boasting an 82% career win rate. Despite losing three flashes in the first three minutes, Gen.G was able to get back up thanks to quick regrouping and smarter plays from thereon. Kiin showed incredible performance on K’Sante as well, using the meta champion pick to his advantage.

The same cannot be said for FlyQuest, who struggled with a comp that followed the standard meta. Gen.G’s dominant map pressure proved too much, and Canyon was easily picking them off one by one with crossmap arrows. In the end, Gen.G brought the series to Silver Scrapes with a clean victory.

Game 5: Gen.G Prevails Over FlyQuest
FlyQuest went all in with a bold Sett top and Fiddlesticks jungle composition, but their crazy drafting strategy didn’t work out this time. The team couldn’t overcome Gen.G’s methodical gameplay, especially after a failed secret Baron attempt. A couple more teamfights that ended in the LCK org’s favor widened the gap, and FLY couldn’t close it fast enough. Peyz’s unstoppable Smolder sealed the Gen.G vs FlyQuest series, claiming a 3-2 victory in the League of Legends Worlds 2024 quarterfinals.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next For FlyQuest?
FlyQuest’s performance proves that innovation and confidence can challenge even the strongest teams. While initially seen as underdogs that got a free ride to the Knockouts through lucky Swiss Stage draws, FlyQuest dispelled all doubts and challenged the strongest Worlds contenders’ limits.
As the LCS prepares for major changes next year, this series will be remembered as a blueprint for Western success on the international stage. For now, they head home having earned massive global respect and a historic achievement at League of Legends’ biggest stage.
Closer To Glory: Semifinals Versus T1
The Gen.G vs FlyQuest quarterfinal match is indeed among if not the most iconic battles in the League of Legends Worlds 2024 tournament. Gen.G now faces T1 on October 26 in what promises to be an explosive LCK showdown. With the current best team in the world going up against the best team of all time, the Semifinals between the two giants promises to break viewership records solely due to the excitement it brings.

Faith has faltered for the Church of Chovy after FlyQuest exposed some vulnerabilities in Gen.G’s armor. On the other hand, T1 with their 3-0 win over TES has reignited the hopes of their believers. Can Gen.G regain their dominant form, or will the pressure from their narrow victory make them crumble just before the fight for the championship title?
