The digital battleground is in place. The champions are ready. The global gaming community collectively waits for the League of Legends World Championship 2024 to unleash a new era of competitive esports. And this year, Riot Games will change the tournament format with the Swiss Stage, promising the once-unpredictable ride of high-stakes matches beginning right at the get-go.
The Swiss Stage
The Swiss format will be implemented in the League of Legends World Championship‘s first phase in 2024, instead of resorting to the group stages familiar to everyone. With this change, Worlds 2024 hopes to bring a more competitive field and a fairer environment to its fierce teams.
The Swiss format for Worlds 2024 features 16 teams competing over five rounds of play. Each match is a best-of-1 (Bo1), ensuring rapid progression and high stakes throughout.
In Round 1, all 16 teams are randomly paired. After these matches, 8 teams will have a 1-0 record, and 8 will be at 0-1.
From Round 2 onwards, teams are paired based on their current records. Teams with the same win-loss ratio face each other. This ensures that each match is between teams of similar current standing.
The final two rounds are the make or break for several teams. Here, the field has been well sorted but still everything to play for many teams. Those who opened to a 3-0 record have already booked their tickets to the next round, whereas those who are sitting on 0-3 records already have the daggers locked in their teeth to accompany their return journey. These final rounds are a do-or-die situation where every game can mean make-or-break in their fate for the tournament for most of the teams.
