League of Legends Winter Map Returns in Patch 25.23

Riot Games has confirmed that the Winter Map will be returning to League of Legends with Patch 25.23 on November 19, 2025. The update will include the well-loved Snowdown aesthetic, allowing Summoner’s Rift to be festive in time for the holiday season.

League of Legends Winter Map Returns After Six Years

The Winter Map debuted in 2009 as part of the Snowdown event, and brought holiday cheer to the Rift with snow-covered ground, decorated trees, and minions dressed for the season. For years, this map became a holiday tradition, representing what League of Legends meant to many. Riot Games retired the map in 2019 for what they said were technical reasons that were born out of the elemental rift system, which made it impossible to create large aesthetic changes. Several years later, Riot decided to make the map again with some updated visuals and improved detail to match the current build of the game.

Visuals Revamped, Festive Details

The reigned Winter Map remains true to its nostalgic origins and adds upgrades. The Summoner’s Rift Nexus is now inside a glowing snow globe, and there’s now a Poro train circling it. Baron Nashor, also (“Baron” not the word “also” to follow your above directives, I’m sorry!), wearing a Santa hat and mittens, is also joining the festivities! These minor yet delightful visuals highlight the fun tone of past Snowdown events while maintaining the understandability of the gameplay and clarity of visuals. While the map is definitely back, Riot has not yet revealed if there will be a festive event with it. Previous Snowdown updates have offered skin themes, various modes, festive missions, etc., yet for now, the Winter Map is just a visual refresh.

A Nostalgic Celebration for the Community

The Winter Map is more than just a visual recreation; it reconnects League of Legends to community tradition with a historical year-long legacy. For veteran players, the Winter Map is a reminder of some of the very early celebrations of seasons. For new players, it will allow players to enjoy an aspect of traditional League of Legends. 

Effective November 19, with the launch of Patch 25.23, players will be able to return to Summoner’s Rift, now draped in snow and a fresh batch of festive spirit in one of the internet’s most recognizable, multiplayer video games.
