The mobile MOBA by Riot Games seems to be a successful project in terms of monetization. Recently, Sensor Tower analytical agency released a report about Riot’s mobile games revenue and it is claimed that Wild Rift exceeded $500 million in global proceeds through Apple Store and Google Play.

League of Legends: Wild Rift is basically a mobile version of the famous PC MOBA, with enhanced graphics, hero models and functions that aren’t present in League. This includes for example close friends system, improved tutorials, intro animations, and more. The game is operated by Tencent, one of the biggest gaming companies in China.

The game was released in October 2022 in different regions across the globe and the testing has started in China in 2021. It is important to mention that the Chinese market is the most profitable market for Wild Rift, as it brought $364 million of revenue to developers, which accounts for 72.2% of users’ expenditure. The second place by revenue is obtained by the US market with 6.8% of total revenue and the third spot is held by the Korean market with 3.7% of total revenue.

According to Sensor Tower, Wild Rift is second in the MOBA games rankings for the first half of 2022, with total earnings of $218 million. The title overtook Brawl Stars with $149 million in revenue. The first spot belonged to the Honor of Kings by Tencent, which accumulated $1.4 billion.

League of Legends: Wild Rift revenue distribution by app markets

As for the distribution by app markets, the total expenditure of Wild Rift players in App Store reached $425 million, or 84.2% of total revenue. In Google Play, players spent $80 million, or 15.8% of total revenue. But if we exclude China from the estimations, App Store got only 43% of revenue, while Google Play topped 57% of players’ spending. According to this data, the Chinese market does make a great impact on the overall earnings of the company from the game.

Moreover, the franchise has recently released a new Star Guardian skin line for both PC and mobile versions of the game, with new skins for popular characters such as Ahri, Seraphine and Akali, as well as Star Guardian 2022 Pass and special missions. As a part of the event, players can also get new emotes, character icons, wards skins, and loot bundles. Such a big event with special purchases in both games will undoubtedly further impact the company’s revenue growth in the second half of 2022. Apart from the in-game stuff, Riot Games developers have also created various videos and browser events to expand the in-game lore.
