Bryan “Maka” Canda has been the designated AWPer for LDLC OL since the start of the year. The team has experienced a slow rise through the rankings and is now right in front of its biggest hurdle of late: The ESEA Premier playoffs.

There, they have the chance to qualify for ESL Pro League, which would finally elevate the French team to the highest level of competition in the world. Maka sat down with us to talk about his personal growth and what needs to be done so that the team can aim for higher goals.

The team has gathered in Lyon to bootcamp. Are you preparing specifically for the ESEA Premier playoffs? If so, how do you think you will fare against your national rivals from DBL Poney?

Yes, we are here to prepare ESEA Premier playoffs, but also the other upcoming tournaments/qualifiers. So it means working on our map pool, our mistakes, our game plans, and so on.

It is always hard to predict what’s going to happen in a national derby, as always it will be the strongest team mentally and the one that don’t get pressured that will get the edge over the other team. Attitude is the key to find our A Game. Even though we didn’t play great recently, we are confident that we can take this win.

Do you think you can qualify for ESL Pro League?

Of course, that would not make sense as a competitor to not even think about it. We trust the process, it’s not always easy but you never know what happens next and we have to be ready to take any fights.

The core for this team has been together since the beginning of the year. Since then, you’ve slowly climbed the ranks and are just outside the Top 30. What does this team need to break into the Top 30?

Yes, it’s been 10 months together already. Time flies quite fast, especially in that crisis period since one year and a half with Covid etc. It feels like we are always so close to breaking into the Top 30. I don’t exactly know what we lack obviously, otherwise it would be fixed. But one thing for sure is we work every time and have discussions to find a way to do it. I would say it is all about self confidence and finding our composure in game, I bet a lot of team live the same issues.

What’s your personal goal for this team? What do you want to achieve this year and in 2022?

With the little time we have with this team for now, I would say we obviously aim for ESL Pro League, and why not qualify for an upcoming Tier 2/1 event before 2022 ends? That will also bring us into the Top 30.

I’ll keep working on myself, grow my game, find consistency, it can concern the game but also outside of it, mentality is important to reach my full potential. I know I can play amongst the best, and establish myself as a Tier 1 player.

Concerning 2022, I don’t know what 2022 will bring for me, the last two years were not that easy as a player but also as an individual. I’ll see in time what to achieve for 2022, for now 2021 isn’t over yet.

Our last question is on the new CS:GO update. How did you and your team adapt to the new grenade mechanic?

It is a funny update and interesting one, we are trying to implement it in our gameplay and find team tricks. Individually, it is also a big thing, there’s a lot of thing to do and it is giving more options for calls on both sides.

LDLC OL will kick off their playoffs run with a national derby against DBL Poney. Should they succeed, they will face either Sprout or AGO next. The Double Elimination bracket will provide them with a safety net, but only the Top 2 spots will actually give them a chance to advance to the elusive ESL Pro League.

Thanks to Maka and LDLC OL for this interview!
