What is KAMITSUBAKI City Under Construction About?

Kamitsubaki City Under Construction is an elaborate Japanese mixed-media project by Kamitsubaki Studio that started in 2019. The project takes a ton of forms, from songs to videos, tabletop role-playing games, and video games.

The centerpiece of this project is Kamitsubaki City Ensemble, a rhythm game in which players work with AI girls who have come back to life after an apocalyptic disaster. These girls are using song magic to create songs to start the world back up. The story looks into the mystery of what happened leading up to the apocalypse and the AI girl’s existence, understanding it over the course of the music. As the music goes on, understanding unfolds. These interactive and immersive features have built a community of over 20,000 users and have ARG and story-based elements.

The source material is set in a world where a cataclysmic event seven years earlier destroyed most of humanity. It focuses on Kamitsubaki City, which has been selected as a place of research and recovery. 

Anime Adaptation Announcement

A television anime adaptation of the series is confirmed for 2025 (produced by SMDE), directed by Kōdai Kakimoto. Ainori Takashin is writing the script, and it will include character designs by PALOW. The voice cast for this anime is a little unique because it’s mainly members of V.W.P (Virtual Witch Phenomenon). 

KAMITSUBAKI City Under Construction will premiere on July 3, 2025, at 11:56 PM JST. 27. Besides 27 TBS and affiliate stations across Japan, the series will also be available internationally via the streaming service Crunchyroll. The anime is a collaboration between Kamitsubaki Studio and PIEDPIPER. It also features oversight by Sōki Tsukishima, who is in charge of the world setting, original scenario, and supervision.

There’s a special theatrical version called KAMITSUBAKI City Under Construction: Witch’s Daughter -Witchling- before it officially airs. It’s a limited two-week screening in Japan starting June 13, 2025, intending to garner interest in the full series. Not only is this series different because it’s mixing digital virtual talent with anime production. But, it’s also different in that it is both a multimedia series and an animation.
