Just Error Disbands

When players with big egos, successful careers and high expectations decide to form a new team overnight, the biggest risk is quitting before the lineup has had the chance to fully mature. Dota 2 is not a game in which you can expect amazing results right away. It doesn’t matter how talented you are. Rosters are forged over a period of months or even years.

Problems

To come up with something brand new and then expect to succeed at your first tournament while playing against the best teams in your region is next to impossible. But that’s exactly what the expectation tends to be when the individual members of your team won a lot of important trophies in their career.

One of the main weaknesses of Just Error is obvious without knowing the actual details: communication. SumaiL is a Pakistani, the other 4 guys are from the CIS region. When the action starts happening and decisions need to be made fast, people think fastest when they can do it in their first language. No doubt, Solo and the rest of the crew want to be able to speak Russian. But they can’t because SumaiL doesn’t understand the language.

So most likely, what do they do? They either ignore him for the most part and just talk among themselves, which creates a feeling of disconnection, or they make a compromise and use some kind of broken English. In both cases, communication is inefficient, imprecise, and ineffective.

Another big problem with Just Error’s roster was the roles overlap. SumaiL wants to play as the team’s midlaner and No[o]ne wants to do the same thing. Ultimately, the CIS player agreed to play in the offlane, but that was far from optimal. To put a pure midlaner in a totally different lane is like asking your goalkeeper to play as the team’s striker in a game of football. Or vice versa.

Results

Just Error went into EPIC League Division 1 with big expectations. But it quickly became obvious that they weren’t up for the challenge. The other competitors, for the most part, were highly trained and highly skilled. This was not a casual event. Everyone was world-class and every victory took a lot of skill.

To be honest, I expected Just Error to lose all of its matches. But they didn’t. They managed to win 2 of them out of the 9 they played. One against Alliance and one against Liquid. Then, in the tiebreaker, they beat both mudgolems and Alliance to qualify for the Play-In Stage. But during that stage they lost to Yellow Submarine and failed to compete in the Playoffs of EPIC League Division 1 as a result.

Aftermath

My expectation is that Solo and the rest of his former Virtus.pro teammates will soon build another roster of their own. But this time they will probably go for a purely CIS combination. If they can find themselves a good offlaner and a good roamer, the future looks promising for them.
