In recent years, various fans have been speculating about the situation of Overwatch 2. When Overwatch was being tested in 2025, It looked like it could become a really popular esports game. Teams from all over the world wanted to compete in it. At first, it was open to anyone but then later the activision Blizzard decided to make it a closed league where you had to buy a slot for a $20 million. 

In 2019, Blizzard announced a new version of Overwatch called Overwatch 2. It was different from the original game and it had a lot of problems. The Overwatch league was losing money because they didn;t make as much as they were promised. Then there was the big scandal at Blizzard a few years ago. All of this made the teams want to quit. 

So, before Microsoft bought activision Blizzard, the teams were offered a chance to leave the league. This ended the Overwatch league, but a few months later a newly open league started. This announcement made a lot of fans and players excited.

So, is Overwatch still alive?

The ESL FACEIT Group is bringing back Overwatch’s official esports into life and is now called the Overwatch Champions Series (OWCS). This is a great opportunity for every player because they wanted to make it more open and accessible, just like they did to Counter Strike 2. 

ENCE is also excited about this new league. They believe that there’s a lot of great talent out there that fans are hungry for more Overwatch action. That is why the ENCE was being part of this plan, although there’s not much information yet about the long term but ESL FACEIT Group is being active in this decision makes everyone more thrilled. 

New Teams and Investments Flood the OWCS

In addition, the OWC wants to make teams come back. A lot of new teams and investors from around the world are getting involved now that the franchised league is over, and because of the end of the franchise league, Team Falcons has brought back a really strong team together with the female team from the Middle East and North Africa region. Not only that, more big names like Fnatic and TSM are also joining Overwatch. 

There will be regional competitions in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. These will lead to big international events at DreamHack. The Overwatch league tried to make esports more like Americans sports, with teams based in specific cities. However, the only problem with the OWCS right now is people aren’t sure how stable it is. The prize pool and the long term plans aren’t clear yet.
