Summary:
- Horses spawn in Zone 1’s Emerald Grove, Zone 2’s Howling Sands, and meadow biomes across Orbis.
- Update 3 introduced permanent horse taming using carrots, making horses friendly and base-ready.
- No saddle is required to ride, and tamed horses remain at your base unless killed by enemies.
Horses are one of the most valuable mounts in Hytale. It offers faster and more efficient travel across the massive world of Orbis. The game’s launch in early access initially limited horse interaction to temporary riding without full taming capabilities. However, Update 3 introduced permanent taming mechanics. This Hytale horse guide explains exactly where to find horses, how to tame them with carrots, and how to ride them effectively.
Where to Find Horses
Horses spawn across several biomes in Hytale’s world. Zone 1 and Zone 2 both contain horse populations that spawn randomly within their environments. Horses are most commonly found in meadow biomes, where they typically roam undisturbed while players gather materials.
The critical challenge when finding horses is their cautious behavior. They will flee the moment they detect you approaching. Making direct pursuit frustrating and inefficient. Sneaking behind horses before pressing the interact key gives you the best chance of mounting before they bolt.
Alternatively, players who have progressed their farming infrastructure can craft a Feed Bag at the Farmer’s Workbench Tier 2. It is used to lure horses to a desired location rather than chasing them across the biome.
How to Ride a Horse Without Taming
Riding a horse in Hytale requires no saddle and no preparation beyond getting close enough to interact. Approach a horse and press the F key to mount. If you were able to manage to reach one before it bolts, you’ll immediately begin riding without any additional steps. Once mounted, you can press Shift to make the horse sprint for significantly increased travel speed. The Spacebar triggers jumps that can clear obstacles in your path.
Press F again to dismount when you reach your destination. Before Update 3’s taming changes, untamed horses would immediately run away after dismounting and return to the wild. As a workaround, when taming it permanently is still not available, players could construct fence-like enclosures at key travel points.
Taming Horses Permanently with Carrots
Finally, the Update 3 introduced full horse taming mechanics, and the process centers entirely on carrots. Approach any mature horse with a carrot in hand, and nearby horses will come to you voluntarily rather than fleeing. Feed the carrot to the horse to permanently change its behavior. After being fed, horses become persistently friendly and will no longer run away when you dismount.
Foals tend to approach even more readily than adults when carrots are visible. Carrots can be found randomly throughout the wilderness as you explore. Carrot seeds are craftable at a Farmer’s Workbench using 3 Essences of Life. It allows dedicated farming players to maintain a steady carrot inventory.
Once tamed, a horse will happily remain at your base without wandering off, creating a reliable mount that’s always available for your next expedition.
