Pokémon Legends: Z-A has a new twist on Mega Evolution, with the addition of Mega Stone Delphoxite for Delphox, Chesnaughtite for Chesnaught, and Greninjite for Greninja. The new Mega Stones bring an exciting evolution path for the Kalos starters while leaving speculation on how they can be accessed in the game. In this article we aim to do a sophisticated and thorough analysis of the Mega Stones and how they can be obtained.

What are the Mega Evolutions?

Delphoxite, Chesnaughtite and Greninjite are required Mega Stones to Mega Evolve Delphox, Chesnaught and Greninja in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.  According to the official announcement from The Pokémon Company and Nintendo, the Kalos starter trio receives Mega Evolutions in Legends: Z-A. Mega Evolution is a significant development both mechanically and in terms of the world-building narrative, which provides long-time Delphox, Chenaught and Greninja enthusiasts a high-level evolution and adds yet another space in the meta-structure of the game around Mega Evolutions.

Ranked Battles Reward Model

Delphoxite, Chesnaughtite, and Greninjite are not obtainable through the usual single-player progression. The official Pokémon news states: “Mega Stones for Mega Chesnaught, Mega Delphox and Mega Greninja will be obtainable only as rank promotion rewards in the Ranked Battles Matches in the Z-A Battle Club.” Here are the ways to obtain them:

  • Season 1 of Ranked Battles gives Greninjite.
  • Season 2 awards Delphoxite.
  • Season 3 will award Chesnaughtite.

Accessibility and Paywall Concerns

Due to the fact that it is locked behind Ranked Battles, it seems necessary to have a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online (or other way of accessing online multiplayer) because the Ranked mode is online. The official statement says these Mega Stones “cannot normally be obtained through normal gameplay.” While these Mega Stones will “plan to be redistribtued” in the future, it does not guarantee how often or with which method.

Conclusion

All Mega Evolutions serve a functional enhancement to Pokémon Legends: Z-A ‘s evolving ecosystem. From a design perspective, it meets fan expectations, balances competitive depth, and enhances the legendary status of the trio. However, the fact that it is gated behind Ranked Battles raises real questions about accessibility and fairness for players.
