In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Zygarde takes center stage in the plot and serves as a benefit and culmination of the post-campaign experience. Although early encounters drop clues confirming Zygarde’s existence, full capture of the Pokémon is gated behind specific plot beats and a difficult multi-stage battle. This article breaks down the requirements, location, battle strategy, and form system so that players can attempt this legendary capture with their eyes open.
Unlocking the Quest

Prior to catching Zygarde, three major events must be achieved:
- Firstly, players will need to finish the main story then move onto the post-game. According to Dodo, Zygarde becomes unlockable through the post-game mission “To Keep the World in Balance.”
- Secondly, you will need to capture both of the remaining big legendary Pokémon, Xerneas and Yveltal. Catches of Xerneas and Yveltal trigger the battle with Lysandre and unlock Zygarde.
- Finally, after that catch is completed, the trainer returns back to the midpoint at Hotel Z, which includes the trainer battle with character Lysandre for one final time. Winning against Lysander makes Zygarde appear.
Location & Initiation of the Encounter

After meeting all the requirements, Zygarde waits in a specific spot, the center of Wild Zone 20, at the foundation of landmark Prism Tower. Guides state that you start the battle with Zygarde simply by approaching it in this location.
Important note: When Zygarde appears in Wild Zone 20, Alpha Pokémon will not spawn in the zone until Zygarde is defeated. That means trainers working in the zone for consistent farming applications will need to consider their strategy.

The Multi-Phase Battle Analysis
The battle against Zygarde goes through three phases, each unveiling a increasingly more difficult kind of Zygarde. Below is a breakdown:
Phase 1: Zygarde 10% / Low Form

Zygarde appears in “10 % Form” (basically the dog form). It is level 84 in this form. This stage is fairly simply, strong Ice-type moves are extremely useful as Zygarde is weak to Ice-type moves. This stage is where trainers will want to build momentum and build resources for the later stages.
Phase 2: Zygarde 50% / Serpent Form

As soon as the initial form falls, Zygarde changes to its “50 % Form” (serpentine).
Attack patterns intensify: actions such as Rock Slide, Crunch, Dragon Pulse become visible. The Ice weakness is still applicable.
Vital strategic comment: When Zygarde charges up its final (for example, Land’s Wrath), the trainer must retract their active Pokémon and stay away from the arena centre until the attack is over.
Good preparation here, healing resources, powerful Ice/Fairy/Dragon-type moves, is very important.
Phase 3: Zygarde Complete Form (100 %)

After cutting the former form’s HP to a certain threshold, Zygarde takes its “Complete Form”, the 100 % form.
This is its most threatening stage: Zygarde now attacks directly the trainer’s character, rather than merely the Pokémon. Its notable attacks are “Core Enforcer” (laser and high area explosion) and “Land’s Wrath” (multi-strike ground destruction).
Strategy: At the start of Core Enforcer, rush to the left or right edge of the arena, dodge the glowing “Z” laser, then secure solid ground before the explosion. In Land’s Wrath, retreat your active Pokémon and get out of the way of the strikes. Keeping a level head and reactive rewards you.
Only after defeating this phase can you try to catch Zygarde.
Capture Details & Form Mechanics
After the last phase, Zygarde is guaranteed to be caught using any Poké Ball. No more chance fails. When it is captured, you gain the Zygarde Cube and gain the means to switch between its 10 % and 50 % forms during battle. The Complete Form and the Mega-Evolving ability have additional requirements. The Complete Form still has the requirement to use the proper Keystone or Zygardite and use Mega Evolution only when the health is below 50%.
