In Version 6.2 of Genshin Impact, titled Luna III (Song of the Welkin Moon: Interlude), HoYoverse is finally introducing “Hexerei” for players to interact with. Some Mondstadt characters, who have always had a witchy vibe, are now official Hexerei characters. When you have two or more Hexerei characters in your party, you can unlock a synergy that grants a powerful buff for your entire party. The following article explains how to unlock this buff while detailing who can use it.
The Hexenzirkel: Who They Really Are

To understand what Hexerei means in the game, you must know about the Hexenzirkel, which is the witches’ coven in Teyvat.
- The Hexenzirkel is a secret coven of witches and scholars, with Alice being a major founder.
- They experiment/be involved with magical things, like the Irminsul, which is associated with world-memory lore.
- The members are highly capable, performing alchemy, divination, and more complex magical skills.

From official information, eight characters will be given the Hexerei tag in Version 6.2. These are:
- Durin
- Venti
- Klee
- Albedo
- Mona
- Razor
- Fischl
- Sucrose
Witch’s Homework: How to Unlock Hexerei

To convert a character into Hexerei, you will need to complete a questline called “Witch’s Homework” (also known as Alice’s quest).
- When you complete the specific quest for each of the characters:
- They gain new passive abilities
- The effects of their Constellation changes usually become stronger and thematic
They count as Hexerei, and thus can gain the bonus from Secret Rite.
Hexerei: Secret Rite

You need to have at least two Hexerei characters as part of your party to utilize this. Once it is activated, the Hexerei characters will experience special bonuses, which will downgrade their abilities or buff them in powerful ways. The bonuses are character-specific. Some of the confirmed ones:
- Venti: His Normal Attacks will become Anemo-infused piercing arrows when his Elemental Burst (“Stormeye”) is active and have a chance to prolong the duration of the Burst.
- Albedo: Rather than creating his typical isotomas, he now creates Silver Isotomas that cannot be destroyed by enemies, and which scale damage for other characters in the Hexerei system based on his DEF.
- Klee: Her Normal Attack combo no longer resets; on her third Normal Attack she will use her charged attack by using an “Explosive Spark”
- Fischl: If Oz is currently in the field, triggering Overload will provide a buff to party ATK; while triggering Electro-Charged (or “Lunar Charged”) will allow the team to gain Elemental Mastery.
- Razor: If during his Elemental Burst he creates more Electro Sigils than he normally would, he will trigger an AoE Electro attack and regenerate energy.
- For Sucrose and Mona, some of their Secret Rite buffs are not described in detail yet.
Conclusion
In Genshin Impact’s Luna III, the Hexerei system is a monumental shift. It’s not only about increasing the stats of older characters; it formally acknowledges the characters as witches of the Hexenzirkel, giving each a quest and adjusting their mechanics to synergize in a significant way. In terms of the lore, it means taking the witches’ cult out of the ether and integrating it into the character lore. This could be a massive turning point in the way that HoYoverse relates narrative and mechanics, and I anticipated that many long-term players would truly appreciate the change.
