Hearthstone Battlegrounds adds Aberrations and Old Gods in major September update

Hearthstone Battlegrounds is getting a new minion type called Aberrations with Patch 36.6.1, bringing a fresh discard-focused mechanic and two Old God Deities into the mode.

Blizzard revealed the update during BlizzCon 2026 and confirmed that Aberrations will arrive on September 22.

The new tribe revolves around sacrificing and discarding cards to awaken either C’Thun or Y’Shaarj during a match. A wide range of new minions, Tavern Spells, Trinkets and heroes will support the archetype.

Aberrations introduce a new Deity mechanic

The central mechanic behind Aberrations is the Deity system.

Every time a friendly Aberration dies, players make progress toward awakening their Deity. After three sacrifices, the Deity enters the fight with a powerful effect.

There are two possible Deities:

  • C’Thun distributes its accumulated stats across the rest of the player’s board
  • Y’Shaarj brings back the first two Aberrations that died in combat with their maximum stats

Only one of the two is available in each match, and the active Deity is selected randomly at the start.

The entire Aberration archetype is built around accelerating that awakening process and then scaling the chosen Old God into a major late-game win condition.

Discard becomes a full Battlegrounds strategy

Discarding cards is another major pillar of the new tribe.

Several Aberrations either reward players directly for discarding or offer effects that require players to sacrifice cards from hand.

Brain Rotter, for example, can discard a card to give the active Deity +2/+2, while Cutthroat K’Thir scales itself and the Deity whenever a discard occurs.

New mechanic Effect
Aberration deaths Progress Deity awakening
Discard Activates scaling and utility effects
C’Thun Splits its stats across other minions
Y’Shaarj Resummons dead Aberrations
Deity awakening Triggers after three sacrifices

Other cards expand the strategy with Tavern Spells and additional scaling options, giving players multiple ways to build around the tribe rather than forcing one fixed composition.

Drest’agath and Kith’ix join the hero pool

Patch 36.6.1 also adds two new Battlegrounds heroes.

Drest’agath uses a one-cost Hero Power called Incubate, allowing players to discard a card and receive a random Aberration.

Kith’ix takes a different approach.

Its two-cost Dark Ritual ability gives the player two random minions. Once one of them is played, the other is discarded.

  • Drest’agath directly generates Aberrations through discard
  • Kith’ix creates a choice between two minions
  • Rat King will now support Aberrations
  • Several existing heroes will be banned in Aberration lobbies

Blizzard says both new heroes will be guaranteed to appear in every game for the first two weeks following the September 22 launch.

Naga leave the minion pool

The introduction of Aberrations also means one tribe is temporarily leaving Battlegrounds.

Naga will rotate out of the minion pool when Patch 36.6.1 launches.

As a result, Naga-specific heroes and cards will also be unavailable during that period.

Aberrations, meanwhile, will appear in every lobby for their first two weeks.

That guarantees players a chance to experiment with the new tribe immediately rather than relying on random lobby availability.

New minions reshape Battlegrounds builds

The update includes a large number of new Aberration minions across several Tavern tiers.

Some focus directly on Deity scaling, while others build around Tavern Spells, Battlecries, Deathrattles or discard.

Dark Paradox is one of the more unusual additions.

The minion has several possible versions, with a different Dark Gift, Tavern Tier and stat line selected randomly at the beginning of each game.

Other new cards include Joyous, Zoatroid, Vicious Mindslasher, Mysterious K’Thir, Mindbender Ghur’sha and N’raqi Sapper.

The scale of the update suggests Aberrations are intended to support multiple archetypes rather than function as a narrow one-dimensional tribe.

Tavern Spells and Trinkets expand the theme

Patch 36.6.1 adds several new Tavern Spells tied directly to the discard mechanic.

Sludge Corrosion grants stats to a player’s board and casts twice if discarded. Corrupted Coin provides Gold and can increase maximum Gold when discarded, while Energizing Chamber directly buffs the player’s Deity.

New Lesser and Greater Trinkets further support the archetype.

Some improve Deity scaling, while others interact with discard frequency or allow players to duplicate important Aberrations.

Blizzard is also rotating several existing Trinkets and minions in and out as part of the broader update.

Duos receive dedicated Aberration support

Battlegrounds Duos are also receiving exclusive changes.

Voidpriest Cloner can pass copies of discarded cards to a teammate, while C’Thrax Wrecker buffs both players’ Deities through Battlecry, Deathrattle and Rally effects.

Existing Duos cards including Man’ari Messenger and Transport Reactor are also being adjusted.

This gives the new mechanic relevance across both standard Battlegrounds and team-based play.

Assessment

Aberrations look like one of the more mechanically distinctive Battlegrounds tribes Blizzard has introduced in recent updates.

The combination of discard, sacrifice and Deity scaling creates a gameplay loop that rewards planning several turns ahead rather than simply buying the strongest minions available.

C’Thun and Y’Shaarj also provide two different endgame directions, which should make Aberration compositions less predictable.

The most important factor will be balance.

Because Aberrations are guaranteed in every lobby for two weeks and interact with several new spells, heroes and Trinkets, the tribe will immediately have a major impact on the Battlegrounds meta.

Patch 36.6.1 launches on September 22, giving players their first chance to test whether the new Old God-focused archetype becomes a dominant strategy or simply another flexible option in the Tavern.
