Christopher “GeT_RiGhT” Alesund has decided to step out of retirement and enter professional CS:GO again, at least for one tournament. Together with former Ninjas in Pyjamas members Adam “friberg” Friberg and Patrik “f0rest” Lindberg, they formed a new CS:GO squad called d00m.

The veteran roster, which is rounded up by former Fnatic player Jack “Jackinho” Ström Mattsson and former Dignitas player Jonas “Lekr0” Olofsson, aims to qualify for the upcoming IEM Rio Major, scheduled to take place in November.

d00m to attend IEM Rio Major open qualifiers

Because the new Major rules require every participating team to qualify, Europe will host two qualifier events — European RMR A and B, featuring 16 participants each. While 12 teams have already qualified via PGL Major Antwerp 2022 standings, the remaining 20 teams can qualify via one of the four rounds of open qualifiers.

This means that a squad of d00m’s caliber could easily make it to the regional qualifiers and possibly even to the Major. Europe will send no less than 16 participants in total to this highly-anticipated competition and that gives d00m a real chance.

GeT_RiGhT, who retired not long ago, would have probably not made this decision under normal conditions, as the odds of a 32-year-old player making a triumph at this competitive level are becoming quite slim. But given the amazing opportunity provided by the new qualification format, it must have been hard for him to say no.

After all, this man is one of the best-known players in the history of CS:GO and was part of the NiP roster that obtained the epic 87-map win streak on LAN. It’s true that this happened in the early days of CS:GO, when the competition was not as fierce as it is today, but it’s still an extraordinary achievement.

Can d00m succeed and qualify for IEM Rio Major?

It remains to be seen if d00m can achieve their first objective of the campaign. Qualifying for the regionals would be a respectable achievement for a newly created team full of veterans. In the world of esports, a team of 30-year-olds is considered quite an old roster.

One thing that could help d00m is sheer determination. After a certain age, ambitious players might want to prove that they still have what it takes to win against the world’s best. GeT_RiGhT is for sure a very ambitious guy for whom CS:GO has meant a lot. Now that he’s retired, he probably longs to relive the good old days.
