These teams came from six regions after going through regionally intense qualifiers, as well as competitive, top-level events. This year, in Riyadh from July 16 to 20, we saw teams face each other for an exciting high-stakes competition. Specifically, eight teams began at a group stage, competing for just four playoff positions.

Gen.G’s Road to Grand Finals

Gen.G’s path to the 2025 Esports World Cup (EWC) Grand Finals was defined by unflinching dominance and resolve. Gen.G entered the tournament as the reigning Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) champions. Moreover, they were the only undefeated team in series play for the 2021 season, which meant they were the rightful favorites of the tournament. And that firmly placed them amongst the best League of Legends organizations in the world.

They started their road to the Grand Finals, beating FlyQuest in the Quarterfinals 2-0, building early momentum. After that, they faced one of their toughest challenges yet against G2 Esports in the Semifinals, finally winning after a 2-1 matchup. Their semifinal win paved the way for a Grand Finals match with Anyone’s Legend (AG.AL). And it illuminated Gen.G’s ability to, at times, stay calm in pressure moments and adapt within multi-game series.

Grand Finals Match Breakdown

The League of Legends Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025 Grand Final was an exhilarating best-of-five series between Gen.G Esports and Anyone’s Legend (AG.AL). To begin, Gen.G started strong with a sound and confident first two games. Notably, game 1 had a decent opening from Kiin’s K’Sante and Ruler’s Varus, giving Gen.G an early gold lead. Furthermore, with Chovy’s Yone in the midlane, they were able to dictate the pace of the game even more. Gen.G secured objectives with ease and punished AG.AL for overcommitting, sealing the game at just over 30 minutes.

AG.AL didn’t roll over and fought back with everything they had to make sure it wasn’t a sweep. Consequently, Game 3 saw the momentum swing back to their favor and combat first-game momentum from Gen.G. There were key fights where we saw AG.AL capture the advantageous teamfight with their coordination and pick potential and tie the series back up at 2-1. Game 4 was an ultimately intense tactical battle where both teams were playing aggressive but calculated plays with their positioning. Ultimately, AG.AL narrowly took the game, forcing the deciding Game 5.

In the last game, we noticed the impressive way Gen.G regained their composure and strategic mastery of the match. Anyone’s Legend unfortunately weren’t able to recover and couldn’t implement their aggressive, fast-paced strategies from all of their other games. And their overall team stat of 6/20/19 is a solid indication of just how effective Gen G’s tempo was in comparison. It wrapped up in a compelling 29-minute finish that showcased the comeback nature of Gen.G after falling down midway through the series.
