GEN.G & LNG Advance to the Top 8 of LOL Worlds 2024 Swiss Stage

fragster Stalingrad 6. October 2024

Two powerhouse teams are now off to the Knockouts in Paris! LNG Esports and Gen.G Esports have secured their spots at the League of Legends World Championship (Worlds) 2024’s quarterfinals. Both emerged victorious with three wins in the tournament’s Swiss Stage, first among the top 8 teams to advance to the Knockout Stage on October 17.

Dominance in the Swiss Stage

LCK and LPL representatives proved their regions’ superiority in the League esports scene as they blazed through the Worlds 2024 Swiss Stage in their top forms. LNG from China has not once lost a single game in the Bo1 and Bo3 matches they had so far. Meanwhile, Gen.G only dropped Game 1 of Round 3 against Hanwha Life Esports (HLE).

On October 5, LNG and Gen.G won their Round 3 High matches against DPlus Kia (DK) and HLE respectively. This put them as the first teams to make it to the Swiss Stage top 8 and qualified them for the third stage of Worlds 2024. With skill and determination, both teams are showing great promise to be formidable contenders in the single-bracket finals.

LNG Esports: The Last Undefeated Team

LNG stands as the only team in the Swiss Stage to maintain a clean winning streak. The Chinese team did not lose any game in any series, remaining undefeated by Team Liquid, Bilibili Gaming, and their most recent opponents, DK.

Displaying an impressive run, LNG Esports continued their success with a 2-0 score against DK, a convincing match testament to their exceptional preparation and performance. The team’s superior drafting is apparently the strongest in this year’s tournament, consistently outmaneuvering their opponents in the pick/ban phase. LNG has also demonstrated high adaptability with their champions and control of the game, skillfully securing the map objectives to get ahead.

Gen.G Esports: Vengeful and Unyielding

Gen.G’s matchups in Rounds 2 and 3 seem to follow a revenge storyline for LCK’s top dog. After winning a 45-minute Bo1 against Weibo Gaming (WBG), the title-favorite Gen.G found themselves facing Top Esports. The LPL team was one that gave them a massive headache at the 2024 Esports World Cup. This time, however, the odds are in Gen.G’s favor. HLE, who had previously destroyed Gen.G’s shot at a Golden Road in the LCK Summer Grand Finals also fell to them after a close 2-1 series.

With a unique, previously unseen strategy, Gen.G bounced back from their Game 1 loss and dominated HLE the next two. The key seems to be their consistent drafting of Aurora, Ahri, and Nocturne for their topside, an unconventional approach that proved effective. Gen.G simply refused to let the rematch be won by their LCK rivals, and with strong, innovative plays, got their vengeance.

Preparing for Paris

The Worlds 2024 Knockout Stage is the tournament’s finals, set to happen at the Adidas Arena in Paris, France. Only the top 8 teams emerging from the Swiss Stage will be able to compete in this stage, and only a week remains before all qualified teams are finalized.

Due to being the first teams to qualify, LNG Esports and Gen.G Esports will have ample time to rest and prepare for the Knockouts. This break can be crucial in maintaining their momentum and refining their strategies for their upcoming matches.

Now that two quarterfinal spots are occupied, fans can expect a more intense competition for the remaining six positions. The Swiss Stage continues with HLE and DK having the highest chances to qualify with their 2-1 win/loss records.

Meanwhile, teams with 1-1 records are set to battle in Bo1s at the Round 3 Mid Matches, with already interesting matchups:

  • Top Esports vs. Fnatic
  • Bilibili Gaming vs. T1
  • PSG Talon vs. FlyQuest
  • Weibo Gaming vs. G2 Esports

The four teams to win these matches will face each other again in the Round 4 Bo3s to determine who can join Gen.G and LNG in Paris.

A Thrilling Journey Ahead

The road to the Summoner’s Cup is far from over. Gen.G and LNG will have to display continued dominance if they wish to set foot at the main event stage in London. Yet, they have already set a high bar for the LCK and LPL teams. It would be exciting to witness who among them can match LNG’s map control and drafting tactics, or step up to Gen.G’s innovative strategies and macro superiority.

The League of Legends World Championship 2024 continues to unfold, and Gen.G and LNG await their opponents at the final bloodbath. Fans can expect more thrilling matches as the remaining teams fight tooth-and-nail for the coveted spots in the top 8. Is the championship title clearly for either Gen.G or LNG to lift, or are they bound to face disappointing upsets in the Summoner’s Rift?
