Continuing their record of finishing in first place at every European event following the Ignition Series was launched, G2 secured another success at the Allied Esports Odyssey, defeating FunPlus Phoenix in the Grand Final. While the European organisation did not have things all their own way during the group stage, eventually qualifying for the playoffs in third place with a 2-2-1 record to their name, G2 defeated both FunPlus Phoenix and Team Liquid on their way to glory.

The newly formed Team Liquid and FunPlus Phoenix showed that G2 may not have things all their own way in future tournaments however, with both organisations remaining unbeaten throughout the group stage.

How G2 Once Again Came Out on Top

It was a bittersweet victory for G2’s David “DavidP” Prins, who was forced to leave an earlier encounter against Fun Plus early after hearing the devastating news that his father had passed away. However, the Belgian former CS:GO pro returned to help G2 later on, helping them to overcome Liquid 13-9 in the Upper Bracket Final, before overcoming FunPlus once again, this time 2-0 in the Grand Final.

While the bravery of DavidP was there for all to see, it was Mixwell who was the star of the show, as the Spaniard put in yet another MVP showing, finishing the event with the highest kill/death ratio, kills per round, econ score and combat score. His aggression was backed up well by the likes of Ardiis and PaTiTek, who both proved their worth at key moments during the Finals.

Can G2 be Beaten at VALORANT?

Five-time champions G2 were pushed harder than ever before by their rivals at the Allied Esports Odyssey, with both FunPlus and Team Liquid seemingly starting to gel, having only named their rosters over the past few weeks. FunPlus’ Shao and Liquid’s ScreaM were particularly impressive, suggesting that they may have the quality to finally dethrone the European giants.

VALORANT is growing rapidly, with many fans crying out for an international LAN tournament, which would only help to attract new viewers and in the process grow the Esport. With G2 having dominated proceedings in Europe to date, an encounter against the best in which North America has to offer would certainly be intriguing. However, with the Covid-19 pandemic having restricted travel, fans are more than likely going to have to wait for such an occasion.
